Pipe lagging is a good idea for your frame and forks, a friend of mine learnt that after the top tube on his £3000 Colnago got bent courtesy of a baggage handler

me and two other lads went to italy last year with BA and it was free to take your bike as long as there wasn't more than 4 people in your party. we used pipe lagging for our frames and taped the handle bars to the forks. there is help on the net how to pack your bike because you have to let the air out of your tyres too.

Just on past experience of skiing I wouldn't trust any of the baggage handlers with ski's let alone a vey expensive bike!! I would rather hire a bike out there and not be worried about what state my own arrived in! The other advantage to hiring a bike is that it can be hammered and then handed back at the end of the week!!! Not that any of us would contemplate doing that ;D
