I've just nipped to my mates for a brew and to see how he was doing with his neighbours garage roof and have ended up coming home with a retro Motobécane road bike. My question is, the bike is presently fitted with tubs ?? as it was primarily some sort of time travel trial machine so not wishing to be left stranded miles from home , I'm just wondering is it possible to stick on a modern set of wheels without too much being affected ? This then brings me to my next question....has anyone got anything suitable knocking about so I can give it a whirl not that I've got much money, but I'm beginning to learn to accept charity very well so don't worry about embarrassing me with your kindness

What has is got in the way of rear cogs?? You will probably find that it is 6 or maybe only 5; if so the drop outs won't fit a modern wheel.I had this problem once and had to use a wooden lever to get the wheel in and out. Now I've got a modern bike Us oldies are useful sometimes Best of luck

I've got a 700c rear wheel with a 7 speed cassette. Unused but about 15 years old. Let me know if you're interested.

@ Geoff Turns out it's got a 6 speed block on the back and I've not had a proper chance to look at anything yet but I'll keep you posted as I do @ Dave Does that mean 700c are interchangeable with old 27" wheels ?

Dave I tried a 7 speed 700c and it was a job to get it to fit the drop outs. Also check the brake stirrups; on old bikes they are either short and won't reach the rim or long in which case they might work ar be difficult to adjust. An interesting project you have there Andy ps I bet the handlebars are narrow too

Now what Andy?? Sorry I was "Job's comforter" I'm going to take some photos later and post them up so it gives a better idea of what I have, it was in really good nick but he leant it a neighbour to do some triathalons on and he never used it and just left it neglected in his cellar so it needs a quick buffing up with some WD
