This is my first post so hi all and I hope you'll forgive me if I drop any horrendous forum faux pas!
I've been revving up to replacing my Giant Trance with something a bit burlier and have just demoed the new Orange 5, and I want to love it but there's a niggling doubt in the back of my head, and if I'm paying over 3 grand for a bike I want to be damned sure it's right so wanted to get some opinions!
First off, there's no doubt at all that it is an excellent bike, the 650b wheels make a significant difference on technical climbs and it carries it's speed scarily well over rough ground. Today I did my very first "huck to flat" because I was going twice as fast as I normally do without even realising and missed the transition. The bike didn't care, which was good because I slipped a pedal mid air so it could have been ugly!
My problem is that other than this and a couple of other brief moments it just wasn't as fun as I'd been hoping, and I have a theory as to why... I've been ragging the Giant into the ground all summer, and I was finally getting to the point where I would describe myself as "a good rider" and I've been having a hell of a lot of fun because I'm pushing my limits and the bikes too. When I rode the Orange it was so composed over stuff that on the Giant I find quite demanding that it kinda took the fun out of it! My feeling is that if I bought an Orange it would take me a couple of weeks to get used to riding faster and harder and after that I'd be able to truly appreciate the brilliance that I got a few glimpses of over the last couple of days, but possibly paying 3 grand for the privilege of having less fun has really made me think twice! Has anyone else ever had this dilemma or am I deranged for considering not buying a bike because it's "too good"?
