Hmm - Sounds like the sort of plan I should have for this year. I'd love to tag along. Reasons? :- Since a good mate of mine changed shifts a couple of years ago and another moved away and is now starting a family I've not had anywhere near enough adventures recently, as such I've put on a bit of weight which I'd really like to shift. I've fallen out of love with climbing (my head is no longer in it) hence I've started mountain biking. I get out and enjoy a walk when I can; if it's Wales or the Lakes, it needs to be a camp or better a bivvy. I'm really keen to explore more / further which clearly the bike allows. It's good to have a goal, no matter how daft!! So - What'll I need? I have some lightweight bivvy gear, which I've used on walking weekends in Wales and the Lakes. I don't have any bike specific carriers. What would guys recommend? If SWMBO allows (and she usually does 'cause she's a diamond) I could make any weekend that gets planned. Here's looking forward to meeting you all!

Cheers SummitToppler, That was just what I was after - didn't explain myself properly I guess. I wasn't thinking old school panniers and carriers, but the bags fixed to handlebars, frame, seatpost etc. So - just drybac and Velcro straps then?
Hmm, I like my comfort / bottle-o-wine (my walking bag always seems heavy!) Might have to rethink that for riding the bike.
Will get drybags / Velcro, cobble together something that fits and ride somewhere local till something falls off !?
Expect report later.

Simples Now that, Sir, is a cracking idea!! One I shall be employing at the earliest opportunity. One question - why drink some first?

A 3L camelbak bladder holds a whole wine box as I employed manfully at the end of the 2009 TdeF in Paris and also smuggled into T in the park last year.... Although a recommend sharing a bit unless your used to necking 4 bottles of vin rouge

Crikey! It seems I've stumbled upon a forum that seems to have as many ideas for drinking in the great outdoors as riding in it! My kinda people!

Ooh! That's come up quick. I was thinking on the drive home about bivvying this time of year.
Usual rules for bivvying are camp late and strike early. If I'm out this time of year I'll plod on via head torch til late-ish. Is the plan to carry on via a night ride? (I have lights and to spare if anyone needs them)
Or, and I'm basing this on the threads I've read since finding this forum, will it be a case of ride til dark then get tw@tted by firelight?
Brrr! Gonna be a chilly one this weekend. Will have to rethink the sleeping bag I was gonna take. Will pack big fat toasty one.
