I was speaking with someone in my class who prefers to ride road bikes today and he was slagging of mountain bikers by saying that we cover less distance which is obviously correct but I was trying to tell him about the enjoyment of descents and the feeling of accomplishment you get, and he was persistently saying basically 'we are better because we cover more ground than you' and I was wondering what your opinion on how good the ride was?

A bit of both is the way forward. Road to improve fitness and stamina, MTB for skill and pooping yourself with adrenaline when it all goes either horribly good or horribly wrong!

...but I was trying to tell him about the enjoyment of descents and the feeling of accomplishment you get, and he was persistently saying basically 'we are better because we cover more ground than you' Then you are wasting your time trying to convince him otherwise Each to their own really. I ride both, and get just as much enjoyment from a 80+ mile road ride as I did from riding The Raven Trail at Brechfa over the weekend, and that was only 11 miles in length.

yeah I totally agree a mix of both is probably the best but he was almost completely bias towards mountain biking, which annoyed me quite a lot!

It's that they just don't understand why we do it; I've had many roadie friends say this. It is also the same the other way round; saying how can you ride on boring tarmac

i only ride a sporty hybrid, but can cover some good miles and really enjoy it, BUT i also love the mtb, and the places it can take you ( away from civilization and traffic!)

I do both and get a buzz in different ways from them.
But I wouldn't listen to anybody else, do what makes you feel happy. If it's both great, if not that doesn't matter either.
And tell your mate he's not as an accomplished rider as you are, going fast on a mountain bike IMO is much more physically demanding that going fast on a road bike at a constant pace with gradual changes in incline when compared to the mountain.

yeah that is one of the reasons i love mountain bikes is the getting away from all the stress and if i am stressed or whatever riding hard relieves it, yeah i feel more satisfaction flying down a forestry road or a trail fast than a constant fast on tarmac!

Take him out on a mountain bike and get him to do the same amount of miles, unless he's a sissy.

The smile on your face during it ( well most of the time ) and after it, and the buzz it gives you to go out and do it again.
