My old faithful Shimano SH-M038 shoes bit the dust today (but not in the good way they have been doing for many years). So, as I start thinking about new shoes, I thought I'd use the power of the forum and seek some views. My old shoes may not have been the stiffest, but they were comfy, ok off the bike and didn't look too "bikey". (I may be tempted to compromise this last point, but maybe not for the full glitzy disco slipper look). What shoes would people recommend for general xc riding? Cheers, Chris T

I use Shimano MT42s. They look like a normal training shoe but have the facility to fit cleats onto them. As I wear baggies on my mountain bike I prefer the casual look (although some on here may disagree). Having said that, clothing and shoes always comes down to personal preference

Shimano M183 and M161 in this house, although I see the latest 183 is has a lot more of a disco slipper look. I prefer the ratchet system straps as they don't stretch as much when wet.
For winter I have a set of the MW80 Gore Tex ones, but I've never been impressed, as the water just gets in the top when it runs down your legs, and they take days to dry out afterwards, even with the help of newspaper inside.

Thanks guys, the MT42 looks just the thing. I'm also being tempted by some Northwave Spiders, but I'm afraid my size 11's may be a bit of a squeeze in those spangly heels Bird...(and they may not go with my bag)

Hope you guys don't mind me resurrecting an old thread.
I currently use a pair of Shimano XC50 MTB cycling shoes, and I love em. However, I saw the pictures from the Degla snowy ride and was thinking my feet would be soaked and freezing if I was just wearing my current shoes. Do you guys use overshoes? Bad weather specific shoes? Or just MTFU and deal with it?

I have a pair of Northwave Celsius boots for winter. They are Gotetex lined and 'supposedly' waterproof, (which they probably were when I bought them a couple of years ago). The are SPD specific, so cannot be used on flat pedals. During Saturday's ride I also had a pair of Enduro MT500 overshoes on as well as a pair of Sealskinz (Waterproof socks). As you may have guessed I like my toes to be toastie Shimano also do a pair of winter boots as well as lots of other manufacturers. Your best bet would be to take a trip to your LBS (local bike shop), and see what they have on sale.

I'm thinking the Shimano MTB shoes when the weather is OK, when it's horrific a pair of light weight walking boots on the flat sides might be better.

I have the same shimano shoes for all weather and all types of riding. I wear sealskinz thermal (and waterproof) in the winter and sometimes a normal pair of socks under them if it's really cold. That's what I wore on Saturday's ride and my feet were warm and dry ;D
