This is probably going to sound like a very daft question. I come from a road bike background which involves nothing but skin tight lycra, so I was curious, I see loads of pictures of mountain bikers wearing trousers, am I correct in assuming these are "cycling specific" trousers? Or are they simply waterproof trousers on over padded shorts? Doesn't the cuff get caught on the big ring all the time?

I often wear 'walking' trousers over bike shorts. The trouser leg doesn't seem to get caught in the chain, but if it did, I'd just tuck the trousers into my sock: old style-ee I've never won any fashion contests.

I just wear a pair of Ron hills, they do the job. As long as it's not below about 5 degrees I'd rather be out in shorts anyway.

In the winter I just stick with bib tights, the same type you'd use on your roadie.
There are mtb specific trousers out there made by the likes of Endura and Altura. A lot of it is down to personal preference.

I have a few pairs of Altura Attack trousers, they are fantastic at keeping you dry and warm all year round, they are very breathable and I wear a pair of bib shorts underneath. As for catching, they have a velcro strap at the cuff to tighten the chain set side, my old pair have caught a few times but at the end of the day they are MTB pants not Italian lycra

I do own one pair of MTB trousers but I've not used them for MTBing for ages, only walking. Just find that if it's wet they get soaked really easily and you yet colder than you would in shorts or tights, and if it's dry they are too hot. Also they do tend to catch in the chain ring. If it's really cold I wear tights, otherwise 3/4 shorts and lycra leg warmers.

I wear Gore Bike Wear trousers all year round. My pins only see the sun very rarely!! I've had the ones I've got for about 10 years, no rips or tears and they dry fairly quickly. They've got a velcro bit at the ankle that stops them getting caught in the chain and they can also be zipped off at the knee if need be. And you can obviously use them for other outdoor activities too.
I'm actually in the market for a replacement pair at the moment and it looks like I'll be getting the Gore Bike Wear Element trousers.
