Is it possible to ride through gwrych castle woods or is it private land? Os maps show no rights of way but from strava it looks as though you can enter just off Rhyd y foel road. I was hoping to ride from that enterance and pass through the woods, castle on the right and come out onto the main road (a547) through the campsite, google maps gives indication that there is a track or road but I have no idea if its passable. Any help appreciated

As far as I know it's private property but with a sprinkling of footpaths, so obviously bikes aren't allowed. A number of years ago, some locals had built some downhill tracks in the forest (and good ones too ) but these were eventually destroyed by the owners The only way to know for sure would be to go and have a look, preferably on foot and see what you can find. If you find a way through there it's then up to you to decide if you want to ride it or not

It can be done, but like Tarbo said, there's no right of way. If you go in off Rhyd Y Foel you go straight past a "No Mountain Biking" sign Still the remains of some (huge) jumps in the woods, and a number of well-used tracks. Have heard reports that people in the castle have started being a bit more defensive about their bit (used to be able to go straight through, as it was deserted). Not been for a few months, so things could have changed.

There is not a no mountain biking sign just one for quad bikes in Rhyd Y Foel its a short climb up to the top and there is loads of trails there...Although some have been damaged. Once you get to the woods head up a bit more and you will see some paint on some trees and follow them. There are loads of routes and some decent jumps. I go up there quite often. Here is a map of one of the possible ways and a video of what its like up there...Did not do any insane stuff though The castle itself is a little harder as was said as there are staff there quite often now but normally if you ask they let you have a look map link ... link

There is not a no mountain biking sign just one for quad bikes in Rhyd Y Foel.... Oops! My apologies! (red faced smiley) - I got Rhyd Y Foel confused with Tan Y Gopa (or whatever the road is called if you bear right after the golf course). There is (or was) an official looking sign as you cross over a sort of bridge to get into the woods proper on the track from the little parking area by the entrance to Gopa Woods (where there are also bike tracks ).

Ah I see I have been there as well and not seen a sign but I do miss these things sometimes. I was in the woods a while ago and saw police going after a motorbike for riding up there. I spoke to one of them and they said its a problem up there but he said nothing about me on my bike...That said they do rip down the trails built there quite often.

Funnily enough, I walked the dog up there last Sunday and had a nose around (looking for the start of 'Stinger!', if you know it...). This is the sign, which is a bit more welcoming than I remembered: It encourages people to come into the woods, and it only says "no *mountain* biking", nothing about cycling through - there were plenty of tyre tracks - it hasn't put me off riding there (subject to being courteous & keeping a low profile). Re-reading the OP I realise that he may have been talking about getting onto the road/track along the bottom of the hill which leads from the bits of castle on the Abergele road near the Rhyd Y Foel turn, back to Abergele - Doesn't look like you can get onto it at the R-Y-F end (not tried). I don't think he's been back to the forum, anyway! Just in case he does come back, the road through the castle is now securely fenced off at either end, but the road in front of the castle and up into the woods is open & popular. I may bump into you up there sometime - probably on a Trek Farley 5

Ah not seen that sign tbh but as you say I think as long as your not going mad its fine and normally everyone seems happy up there and see plenty cycling. Shame the castle is a bit more shut up now. May well see you up there sometime...Can't miss me with my tyres lol
