Didn't use degreaser, just a tea towel (don't tell the mrs ) and elbow grease. It's not noisy at all, when you turn the bars it's like you can feel the bearings turning. Not sure if that makes sense but it's the best way i can explain it.

Yeah, give it a bit for the grease to make its way back into the bearings after getting washed out. It should sort itself out, sit watching corrie turning your handlebars left and right ;D

While i was messing around with it i noticed a couple of things - (bear with me, i don't know the proper name for some of the bits) - After cleaning, the bearings in the bottom bit of the headset were nice and shiny silver but the bearings from the top bit of the headset were still dull
- The bit that sits on top of the bearings in the top bit of the headset was pitted slightly, i am wondering if this is the reason i can 'feel' the bearings when i turn the bars?
Is my headset fooked?

It sounds like you've had it too tight and worn the race surface. You can feel them as you have too much preload on the headset. You only need enough to JUST remove the play. I prefer headsets with cartridge bearings as they are so much easier to maintain and replace the bearings.

Last night was the first time i'd touched it so this would have been done when the bike was assembled. I've just phoned the place where i got it from on the back of this, to see if i can sort something out as the bike is only 8 months old and so is still under warranty. Someone is going to ring me back, i'll let you know how i get on.

Nice one ftasb. That's a definite result.
Sikora, might be an idea for you to get in touch with the place you got yours from.

Result! They are going to replace the headset under the warranty. It's not practical for me to send the bike down to them for repair so they are also going to cover the cost of removing the old one and installing the new one at a LBS. I'll be taking it to The Edge Cycleworks for that. That is a result mate, and quality service too.

Just had a chat with the guys at The Edge Cycleworks about my headset. The WTB Team Cartridge Headset that i currently have and getting replaced has a reputation of not sealing to well, i think the pics in my link above show this quite well! ;D The shop where i bought the bike from will only replace like for like so i'm thinking that i'll stick the replacement part straight on Ebay and see what i get for it. Wiggle are currently selling it for £29.99 - www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/WTB_Team_Cartridge_Headset/5360035393/. The Edge have suggested upgrading to one of these fit-an-forget bad boys - Hope Threadless HeadsetAnd it comes in blue to match my frame colour & rotors, bonus! Anyone ever had one of these?

whats the deal with cartridge bearings over, errr..... non cartridge? Are the bearings already loaded? Or do you stil have to set the load by tightening the top cap?
