Right, after the Bike Factory messed up my gears during the free service, i need to get them set up. But rather than take it back, i'd like to learn how to do it myself. I've looked at Park Tools website. But it might as well be written in Russian for all i can understand.
So basically, my gears aren't as smooth as before, they click on the rear and occasionally shift on their own. The front also rubs on the chain. Where do i start? Do i touch the limit screws, barrel adjusters or the actual cables?
While i'm at it, i'd like to remove the cables to clean them. dunno if this will require more messing about. to set them up

This is where a workstand comes in handy.
You shouldnt need to touch the limit screws unless it throws the chain off the top or bottom cog.
It will omly need a bit of tweeking on the barrel adjusters on the shifters and the mech. You also might need to tighten the cable. If you are going to undo the cable, what I do is make sure the mech is down on the bottom cog, that way all you have to do is re-insert the cable and pull it tight when done and it will be ok, may need a little adjustment.
Like you say while you have the cables off slide off the plastic outers and give the inner cables a clean with a rag and a light coating of grease.

The fron mech should be adjustable at the barrel adjuster on the shifter, if not there may be a little cable stretch and might need re-tensioning.

First thing i did was loosen the cable while the chain was on the largest ring I printed the guide of Park Tools and read through it a dozen times, kind of makes sense i suppose. Think i've got the front mech sorted, but found it difficult to do the rear without a work stand. Found out i've got one hell of an egg in my rear wheel though

Are you all sorted now?
What did you do with the rear mech after loosening the cable at the top?

Was the front i loosened while under tension. Thats all sorted now........i think.
Haven't really touched the rear. Only a little tweek on the barrel adjuster. I would of liked to set it up from scratch, so i could get a better understanding of how it all works.
In all my years of biking, i've never attempted setting the gears myself.

Its not something I like messing with, I can do it but it gets on my t!ts!!
On the rear you shouldn't really have to touch the limit screws, not if the mech has already been set up on the bike. Your mech will automatically sit at the bottom of the cassette with no cable on it, just make sure your shifter is set as for the bottom cog, feed the cable into the mech, pull it tight and do up the bolt. after that its just a matter of some patience and endless turning of the crank fine tuning it with the barrel adjusters.

Problem i find is no matter how well you think you've set them up, you get on the bike and put pressure on everything and its still messed up

Its best to tune ya gears up on the stand then do the finer adjustments while riding because you are not putting any pressure on them while the bike is in the stand.

for the front losen the cable and drop the gear lever 2 number 1 with the chain on the small front ring and large rear ring turn the small screw marked L until the chain is around 1mm from the inside of the chain on the chain shifter.turn the cable tightner on the gear lever around 2 full turns then take up the remaining slack in the cable and re connect to the mech.now push the lever up onto the outer ring and smallest rear cog .adjust the h screw until the chain shifter is around 1mm from the outside of the chain then drop down to the middle ring and large ring on the rear and adjust at the cable tightener on the lever so the chain is around 1mm from the chain shifter!!job done. as for the rear adjust the low screw so that the top cog on the mech is in line with the largest cog on the rear cassette and h screw so the bottom is just inside the smallest cog on the cassette.adjust at the cable tightening screw on the mech .if its a new bike just give the cable tighteners on the levers a couple of turns to tighten the slack out of the new cables e.t.c!hope this helps !!!failing that get it serviced BUT NOT AT HALFORDS!!

I took it to the Edge Cycleworks in the end. Turns out my mech hanger was bent too, which is why the chain was jumping further up the cassette.
