Something that's come out of my post op physio is that I'm quite stiff (ooh err missus) and need to work on joint mobility and general flexibility. Does anyone know any good websites with decent bike specific stretches and the like? It's something I've never really done much of, much to the dismay of my physio. Do you stretch?

Do you stretch? 50/50, so yes and no. There is a book called Mountain Bike Fitness Training which shows a variety of stretching excercises both on the bike and off it. The stretching I do though (when I do them) are the ones I have been shown/done in circuit training and bike spinning classess. Just the basic lower back, groin, calf, hamstring and so on. I really should do it all the time though.

Good subject, somthing ive been thinking about for a while, i never really get stiff but ive been thinking that i should be stretching before and after riding so i dont do myself any damage. Although i have been thinking about it i never seem to remeber to do it, perhaps part the reason is because no other fecker is doing it. Could be an idea for everyone to try and make a concious effort to do it and to egg everyone else to do it, also you wouldnt look such a muppet doing it on your own

I've been told to do stretches for my hamstrings, but they're probably going to be different to ones for your knees.
MBR/Mountain Biking UK were doing a 'stretch of the month' type thing when I last bought whichever one it was.

Guys, the single most beneficial thing you can do is to do some post ride stretching. You young guns probably think pah waste of time, I'm ok but think long term Stretching properly now, will pay dividends in the future and keep you riding and injury free into old age ;D ;D We do stretching classes in the gym in the winter and my god it improves your recovery after hard riding. The stretches have to be done properly though to get best results A great book which I use which explains everything in easy reading style with some great diagrams and illustrations showing you the exact area you stretch with the movement is " Anatomy of Stretching" by Brad Walker. It's available on Amazon for just £9.74 and worth every penny. If you are serious about your health then graba copy ;D

im all for doing some stretched but i reckon its just a bloke thing that because no one lse is doing it then your gonna look silly strectching out etc before & after a ride. But in an enclosed enviroment like a gym or fitness class where you have an instructor doing it along with the rest of the class its quite acceptable!!!!!! If the commentator at the start of the merida's was giving out stretching tip in stead of talking crap for 20 mins then people might take note!!!! ;D ;D ;D NAhhhhh couldnt see that happening!!!!!

Current thinking is that you should not stretch before the activity as that can cause minor tears in the muscle Gentle activity of the activity is wot is recommended It's after the activity when the muscle is warm and full of lactic acid that the benefit of stretching comes in as it lengthens the muscle, flushes out the lactic and helps reduce muscle soreness and stiffness for the next session ;D ;D Cyclists are well known to develop tightness and imbalance in the legs, hips and glutes which can lead to problems, so it's worth doing them stretches guys ;D You can make it look manly if you want by wearing baggies instead of lycra and grunting a lot ;D ;D

Not so much stretches as basic physio, but I have been doing these lately since I hurt my medial ligament and to be fair I have noticed a big improvement in the last few days, I can almost straighten my leg with my weight on it, probably thanks to the exercise where you sit up and try to force your knee cap down to the floor (exercise three I think...) www.orthoseek.com/articles/chondromp.html

i would definately carry out stretching exercises after any strenuous or lengthy physical activity, after having plenty of sports type injuries, due to muscle imbalances most probably after weights! my doctor and physio and what i picked up here and there gave me a few exercises which i carried out religously every day for a year and now after exercise. it not only improves flexibility but it also strengthens muscles and tendons improving your fitness.
