I get bitten to flip by midges (I must be tasty), tried all sorts but I could always guarantee I would get loads of huge welts where I'd been bitten if I was outside when they were (especially at dusk). It got bad last year when a bite on my hand got infected and within a few hours my hand was swollen like a balloon! I done some research, spoken to a few doctors and specialists and found out a few things that really work (for me) in preventing bites.
First, there are a lot of things that midges don't like the smell of, deet being one of them, another is vitamin B. During the summer months I take a one-a-day vitamin B complex tablet. There is more than your RDA in each tablet so your body excretes the vitamin through the skin, this repels the little buggers. If you take one each day (at 3-4pm-ish is best so it's most active around dusk) it slowly builds up in your skin so becomes more effective. Best of all is that us people can't really smell it so you don't go around absolutely humming! (unless you've just spent a good few hours on your trusty steed) Another great source of this vitamin is those Barocca tablets (something stupid like 2000% RDA), they are also great just before a ride because it gives you a nice little energy boost.
Second, you get the itchy red horribleness from a bite because your body is over producing histamine to fight the foreign insect bite. The production of histamine causes inflammation and itchiness, you can reduce this by taking an antihistamine (allergy tablet). This is fine but you usually only take the tablet after you've been bitten and are suffering, which really is too late. One thing that was advised to me was to take a daily antihistamine to build it up inside the body and regulate the production of histamine better. If you do this you can still get bitten because it's not a repellant but your body does not over produce histamine to fight it and it does not go red and swollen, you don't even notice it. Not all allergy tablets are safe to take daily, but one that is made of Loratadine is perfectly fine, that's what I take daily.
So I take.. 1x Vitamin B Complex tablet each day, 1x Loratadine tablet each day, and have a Barocca just before I go out for a ride.
These things work best for me, I don't have to use a repellent at all now. It may not work for you but I would certainly recommend you give it a try if you have issues with midges. ;D
