Anyone else use carb drinks, either for enduros or everyday riding? On the Dyf i used psp22, it worked great and i could really feel the diffrence especially half way round when i would have normally been tireing I felt like i had loads more left to give. I loaded up with it a couple of days before and sipped it throughout the event. The only things was that after i felt ill coz i'd drank so much of it over a few days and wasnt to keen on the taste. Ive been trying the high 5 enery source recenlty and thats what i used for the merida, loading up a couple of days before and sipping during the event, much better taste, a lot less harsh, a little bit of stomach cramping (john will be witness to me nearly pooping myself on the marin last week ). Not sure if it had the same effect as the psp but im gona give it a second chance on the next enduro. Cheap here to - www.discount-supplements.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=9074Has anyone else used these drinks and got any feed back on them?

(john will be witness to me nearly pooping myself on the marin last week ). Cheap or not mate, if it gives you cramps with consequences like that I'd use the PSP. SIS developed it to be very light on the stomach and it's always winning the group tests in the Tri mags and the like. I've never had any issues with it anyway and as you mention I always feel like I've got more to give while using it. I don't start loading as early as you either, you don't want to be too full of insulin in the days beforehand. Try and use low glycemic index carbs like wholemeal pasta to do your carb loading, small portions eaten often is rumoured to work most effectively and helps to keep blood sugar levels stable. Morning of the race I'll sip PSP little and often. There's actually some debate within the science/fitness world as to whether carb loading is effective anyway, some research suggests it has minimal effect on your glycogen stores (which is what you're trying to boost). Minefield. Worth a note that it's probably a good idea to get some extra protein down your neck in the days leading upto an event as well, and maybe a nice big steak. Steak will boost your iron levels which is essential for good oxygen transfer by the red blood cells.

I used SIS energy powders on the C2C a couple of years ago and they gave me and a few others really bad acid indigestion . Since then I only drink water while riding and take the odd gel if I'm starting to flag a bit, relying mainly on energy bars ie. home made flap jacks full of oats, dried fruits, seeds and eggs ;D In hot weather I sometimes put 'Lo Salt' in my water bottle as well, as it is more potassium than salt and stops you cramping up ;D You buy that from your local food shop/supermarket. Another tip that the African runners use before marathons etc is to use maize meal which you can buy from health food shops like Holland and Barratt etc Sometimes it's called Polenta. You can put it in your flapjacks with the flour etc , make it into solid bars or add water and make it like mashed potato. I've read that they swear by it Worth a try m8 ;D

i use torq organic really good stuff and no taste to it at all. you add your own or just have it plain you can hardly tell its in the bottle. there is flavoured versions aswell. i got a 1.6kg drum of it for £17 which is dirt cheap!

Dan - the high5 only gave me cramps the once so i think a bit more testing is needed before i can directly blame in on the high5. I just really prefer the taste of the high5 comapred with the SIS. As for protein i use whey protein as an easy protein source and i did increase my intake before the merida and the Dyfi. I use whey after a ride when i remeber to aid recovery. Spinner - good point about the homemade flapjacks, much nicer than the soggy crap you buy from asda and you also know whats gone in to them. Perhaps we should get a few reciped up here Kingcraig - think the torq could be worth a go, like the sound of not being able to taste it. I find with flavoured stuff in my camelbak that im really sick of the flavour by the end of the ride

torq is really good stuff, you can make it what ever flavour you want just by adding orange juice or what ever. also you can add it to food to boost the carbs a bit before a big ride. really good stuff imo and there a british company

During the summer months I use the SIS GO rather than the PSP, as Dan says sipping some before a ride can make a difference. Worth varying the flavours so you don't get fed up of any particular one. I've not used the GO yet but I understand it's the electrolyte one isn't it. Do you just use this on longer rides Russ?

Yeah on the long Saturday rides where I can be out for 4-7hrs, mainly just in the summer months, rest of the year I go back to either Pikey mix or PSP. The Powerbar mix worked OK for me but it was a bugger for staining the Camelbak bladder.

I think that there is a presentation next Weds evening, at Llandegla. It is by a company based in Wrexham, I am led to believe that it is for Shotz. Think that it begins at about 4.00pm.
