Thanks Chap,
I've had a look at the website previously and I'm impressed. It seems quite active and it seems to have created quite a community. Good job!
Just to put everyone in the picture. My title is 'Recreation Ranger (Cycling)' It was thought that this would encompass my role more clearly as despite how us MTBer's see it Coed Y Brenin isn't just about mountain biking. We have a family cycle trail and the long distance 'Lon Las' route 8 now goes right past the visitor centre. We also get some roadies popping in on their way past (shocking, but true!). There are also plans to try and link up with other communities and projects with cycle trails. So even though CYB has a history of hardcore mtbing, we're trying to broaden the appeal and to be more inclusive. As part of that we are hoping to build a blue intermediate grade trail and a skills area, provided we can secure funding. These two additions would then make Coed y Brenin an ideal venue for begginners and novices to come and have ago and then increase their skills and experience, progress through the grades and have a go on the gnarlier stuff. The skills area would be a loop with progressively harder technical trail features, but also 'chicken runs' around them, giving you the opportunity to have ago or miss them out according to your skills and confidence. Ideally you should be able to use this to gain confidence in an area close to the visitor centre before going out to tackle the trails. It will also give you some idea of what to expect. Despite all this, everyone still refers to me as the MTB Ranger and don't worry, I won't be forgetting the original character and users of CYB. I still want to maintain it as a high class destination, with thrills and spills to match. There is also still plenty of potential for developing new sections of singletrack in the future. As for the Marin. We've had some work done over the last 6 months which has worked quite well, but there is still more maintenance to be done. Re Penmachno, I don't cover it under my current Forestry Commission job, as it is a community built and owned trail. You may be aware that I've looked after the management of this trail as a volunteer on behalf of Menter Bro Machno (the community group). That is still ongoing, but as I now have very little time to devote to it, I'm in the process of handing it over to the group to manage. This won't happen overnight as I wouldn't want to just drop them in it! And I will continue to provide support for as long as is necessary. Even if it means getting my hands dirty! As it happens I've been out the last two nights strimming. The community group I know could do with any support on offer. Not least by everyone simply putting some cash in the honesty box at the trailhead. The money goes towards paying for contractors to come and do the more technical repairs. It's not cheap. We've just had a current program of works completed which cost £4,000 and we could do with rolling that program out on to the rest of the trail. So another £4,000 would be nice to get from somewhere! Many thanks to everyone that has and continues to put their cash in the box. It really is appreciated and the trail couldn't be maintained without that support. It would be great to meet everyone, preferably on a bike! So I'd like to extend an invite to come and ride at CYB, the Marin, Penmachno, or preferably at all 3 venues at some point. It would be great to ride the trails and get forum members perspectives, likes, dislikes, expectations etc. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or queries:
