It's useful as a training aid alongside a training plan with set goals.
The general consensus though is that you need to have been training/researching for a little while before you can get the best out of it.
Other than that I suppose it's interesting to see and a talking point out on the trail.

I'm thinking of getting a basic one myself. It might make the evening turbo sessions purposeful If I do I'll be asking for advice on setting it up for max HR etc

Got my Suunto from these guys >> www.heartratemonitor.co.uk/ decent price and quick service with good advice. Key thing is having a goal, set yourself a target for example a good time at the Dyfi next year. It's as much about measuring your peak performance as it is about recognising when it's a day to go out and take it really easy for a recovery ride. With something like the Suunto you have to be really honest about the data you feed into it for it to give you the correct advice, height, weight, max hr, activity class (hours exercising a week) then it gives a really good indication of what any exercise session has done and from that you can judge what you should do next time. The Garmin Edge series are good for recording via GPS your route so the next time you can race yourself complete with HR and Cadence depending on model.
