I have just come back from a circuit training session at a local gym - 1 hour circuit training followed by a half hour basketball 'warm' down F'in it nearly killed me and my legs are now feeling like jelly. Achin like mad and god knows what i'm gonna feel like in the morning I'm being serious when I say blokes 20 years + my senior were flying past me and my bro I used to do a wide variety of regular exercise before taking up MTB 18 months ago which included some quite tough circuit training, squash, gym work etc. My exercise certainly over the past 12 months has been 95% riding with everything else tailing off. Yes, my stamina on the bike has improved and no doubt my cardio vascular fitness but I really did not realise what muscles have been neglected during this period!! The 1 weekly circuit training session is now going to be a permanent fixture in my diary from now onwards to ensure i'm exercising as many body parts as possible from now onwards ;D Has anyone else had any similar experiences ??

Has anyone else had any similar experiences ?? I used to train in the gym 3 times a week until early spring, i was doing mainly weights and had been doing them for about 5 years. I decided earlier in the year that it was a waste of time and i would have far more fun riding my bike lots more so i quit the gym and have cycled my ass off ever since. Now the nights have drawn in and it has gone a Lot colder Ive decided to try and get my ass back to the gym, all being well I'm going for my first sesh tomorrow. Ive got a feeling its going to be a real eye opener, i know muscles have memory but Ive got a feeling most of my strength will have gone and ill be back on the girlie weights I let you know if i have the same experience as you

i know what you are saying si, before i smashed my foot i use to play football and mtb regularly. it seemed that both sport helped each other, stamina and speed. once foot was better most my exercise was on bike so when i tried football again i felt fit and fast as ever, but the next day i couldn't walk and the muscles hurt for most of that week. like you say, should of carried on through to pain, but it was too much for me so stuff football ;D

I thought you'd sacked off the gym Si? I have ;D (I think anyway) If you're still at Total Fitness do you fancy getting me a guest pass and giving spin a go?

My fitness seems to be maintained doing circuit training 2-3 a week, had a busy month so not had much of a chance to ride any bikes, will hopefully go on my road bike tomorrow morning, so it will be good to see how I fair. Stick with the circuits you will quickly be flying round with the others.

used to do circuits a bit, I always found it a real "total body" work-out, it's something you have to go to for a good while to get used to- I went a couple of times recently and could barely walk after so stopped going!! I have been toying with joining a gym for the winter, but my problem is that come the spring I won't want to use it, and most places seem only to offer 12-month deals. Anyone in a gym in Wrexham that does monthly or pay-as-you-go? or even a 6-month deal?

Yep - jacked in Total Fitness a couple of months ago. Did circuits at Morgan Llwyd - buy an £18 card which gives you 5 Curcuit Training classes which not too bad. 7-8.30ish Thursdays (also do one on a Monday 6-7.30 i think).

On the other hand you can get lulled into the impression going to circuits makes you very fit..until you go to a spinning class, I was talking to a chap who goes to the same circuit training classes as I do and his m8 talked him into going spinning, thinking he was quit fit from circuits he had to leave the spinning class after a few minutes, thought he was going to puke LOL, he did go to an advanced spinning class though, not the wisest of choices. ;D So circuits and spinning combined and you will be blowing the legs off everyone.

The wife did a 3 month membership working out at £20 per month with no joining fee so see what's on offer there (pref before xmas as they will not need the business early January with everyone trying to get rid of the xmas bulge ;D

Has anyone got any tips as to how to build leg strength (for mtbing) fast!!, my legs seem to be pi$$ weak recently. If I'm in the mood I'll ride the road bike and stay seated for all the climbs, definitely improves things. Come to think of it so does riding a 17kg mountain bike. ;D It was something I noticed in the months after my knee op that I was constantly climbing out of the saddle and found it very difficult to stay seated. A little research seemed to suggest it was due to a loss of strength in my legs which kind of made sense. I only really find leg strength to be an issue on the road bike anyway, with mountain biking you tend to use a wide range of cadences and gearings so maybe strength isn't such an issue? Are you having a particular problem?
