Interval training I have really noticed the difference since my gym program included interval training I have been doing 20 mins on bike 1 min level 10 @80 rpm then 1 min level 14 keeping to 80 rpm get ready to sweat! Then on rowing machine on max level 200meters comfortable pace then 200 meters flat out then repeat for 2000 meters record your time to see improvments First time I done the row it was 8mins 35sec before I just had this bout of manflu I was down to 7.55 Out on the bike I could really feel the difference loads of that explosive power that can get flying along. It really increases your recover time too the time your mates catch up your breathing normaly and ready togo again

Does anyone know how to improve flatout sprinting on single track/downhill? Intervals may help but I fear you'll need to build your legs up a bit as well mate. Your build is great for consistent high pace riding but probably not the best for sprinting etc. Think about the difference in physique between say Cav and Contador. I can bore you to death about it in Scotland if you like? ;D

Intervals may help but I fear you'll need to build your legs up a bit as well mate. Does this require a change in diet or a change in riding style? I find i can sprint for a short time atm, but i hit 208bpm recently on some of the dragons back single track, seems a little high to me

I find i can sprint for a short time atm, but i hit 208bpm recently on some of the dragons back single track, seems a little high to me A change in riding style can help with leg strength mate, trying to stay seated and pushing hard where you'd normally stand will make a difference but you'd probably see faster improvement from squats, lunges and power based jumping exercises. As I said before you've got the build of a whippet so don't go mad with the strength/power stuff and just ride to your strengths, you'd look strange (er than usual) if you had massive legs mate. ;D 208bpm is fine at your age, you must have been right at the end of a fierce sprint to reach those numbers though, my heart would have exploded at 208. ;D

If you're worried about scary numbers on your HRM and before you do interval training, I'd advise you do a maximum heart rate test.
Track cycling is a good way of homing your sprinting talents and a fixed wheel bike will push your heart rate up very quickly from a standing start; you can hire out Manchester velodrome for a few hours with some mates or a few forum members ;D
