If I was to replace my crankset with a different set would I need to replace the bottom bracket? If so, how do I know what BB I would need?

No It depends on what bottom bracket you have now, If you currently have a hollowtech BB and cranks you will have to buy a new set of hollowtech cranks.
You happy with what i mean by hollowtech?

I've heard of hollowtech and I know you have to have a specific hollowtech tool for it but I'm not 100% about what it is.
I haven't got a hollowtech BB at the moment. I'm certain I don't. I don't think so. I might have, but I don't know ;D

Unless you buy a hollowtech bb as well. Also there are square taper standard shaft bottom brackets and splined, your s will probabley be square. To remove your cranks you will need a crank puller tool and also a bottom bracket removal tool.

There are other types of BB shimano octalink and Isis BB's
Do you know the spec of your bike? What make and year is it?
Isis BB's are like a star shaped BB axle that the cranks slip onto and I think octalink are square.

Im stumped on that one mate, Its been that long since I last bought a crankset! Best bet is to pop into your LBS and pick their brains. You will need a crank extractor tool like this to remove it though www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=4939woth buying though if you are keeping that type of BB and crank
