So I've had my interest in sponsored events ignited and want to see if anyone here might be inttersested in taking part in a sponsored ride in aid of cancer research in the summer of 2011.
I'm thinking of riding Offa's Dy ke (word filter wanted to call it lesbo lol), but I've never done anything like this before so would probably need help trying to organise it. I'm not sure either as to whether bikes would actually be allowed to ride along the "footpath".
Any help or suggestions welcomed.

I'd definately be up for this having lost my partner 3 years ago through breast cancer. There was talk of summer 2010 for something along these lines though so why wait 18 months?? There's a Wales Coast 2 Coast route thats fully legal.

I didn't know there was talk of dong anything like this for this summer. The reason I was going to do it next year was so that my partner could get fit and ready for it (she's only just started riding after 20 years).
Would like more info on that route.
Condolences for your loss.

I'll dig the link out now anyway - it was a couple of months back i think.

Well I signed up for the BHF in may and although I won't be doing what is classed as the 30 mile event (I signed up for the 15 miler) I'll actually be riding 40 miles. 5 miles from home to the event and then back from the finish.
I've already got £115 for that one and really want to do a big one. The only problem is my other half, having only just got back on a bike isn't fit enough to do anything like that so it will take a while. She also has a weird eating disorder that we need to try and get under control before doing the event.
I'm serious about doing this though and want to make it a regular thing (like at least twice a year). I'd also like to know if I can get a MBNW jersey in time for the BHF.

I take it it is the north coast to south coast since we don't exactly have an east coast. This is what my aim was anyway.
I've always wanted to cycle north to south, if I can raise money while doing it then all the better.

Have a read of this chaps www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=3Tzut&doc_id=1391&v=LYShould give you an idea of whats involved and the route to take. Personally i'd do it the other way around, start on a Tue or Wed, and open the last day up as a forum ride. Would mean some planning needed for those doing the one day with transport but could be arranged i'm sure.

A group of 4 to 6 would be ideal i recon. I did ride across the width of Wales once in a day........... and then turned around and rode all the way back again!! 14hrs it took for the 170 miles. That was in the days before i discovered beer and women. I couldnt do it these days thats for sure.... doddamn those women!!

12 mph is a good steady pace to hold over a whole day of riding

Was definately very much a start stop day that one - more like 10hrs riding and 4hrs of stops!! late breakfast in corwen, another stop in Portmadoc after running out of food and a meal in Caernarfon late afternoon as well as numerous water stops at garages / shops etc.
Did prove the need to plan ahead though - cant ride all day on 1 camelbak thats for sure - especially mid-summer. Its pretty easy on the road to get water, not so easy with an offroad route.

As I've mentioned before, I co-organised a charity bike ride from Holyhead to Cardiff along the Route 8 Sustrans National cycle route June/July last year, raising £22000 for Welsh Air Ambulance and Spinal Injuries research. We did Holyhead to Porthmadog day 1, Port to Machynlleth day 2, Day 3 Mach to Rhayadr, Day 4 Rhayadr to Brecon, Day 5 Brecon to Merthir Tydfil, then Day 6 into Cardiff. We had fund raising evenings/ Auctions each evening and a televised finish. I reckon you could do this route at a push in 4 days, but nicely in 5.
