Ady, I know what you mean with flats, the technique is different and works to a degree, but is not as efficient as being clipped in and also has the disadvantage of putting strain in the knee joints as you are dragging back while trying to keep pressure down !!
The no pain ,no gain thing is true as long as it is good old muscle ache and burn as against pain from incorrect form which may cause long term damage !!
