just signed up to a site called "endomondo" which tracks your gps enabled phone.
once it has the gps signal you set it going and when you get home you stop it and it sends the info to the web site.
log on and it will show you your route on google maps, average speed, climbs etc.
brilliant simple bit of kit that helps keep you going and logs all your rides

Is it really free or do they whack a monthly charge onto your mobile phone bill?? I'm dubious of anything being truly free!!

no monthly whacking onto your phone bill.never noticed anything wrong with it steveg. if your phone or handheld is gps enabled it will lock onto the satellite.
my phone at the weekend had no credit as forgot to top up but it still tracked the and downloaded all the data to endomondo's web site showing all the route etc.
cant fault it to be honest

"Installation of the basic tracker is free but you will incur a minor extra cost from your mobile operator when using the tracker because you transmit data from your mobile to the Internet. A typical workout lasting 30 minutes normally cost you around 0.1 USD or 0.07 Euro if you have a normal pay-per-use subscription (1 USD per MB). Please note that the cost is significantly higher outside your home country. We recommend that you check the cost with your operator before using Endomondo - especially in foreign countries."

Looks good then. I was just reading the terms - specifically "What kind of information do we collect" half way down which gives a fair idea of how they'll be funding the site. www.endomondo.com/terms

i am sure you have checked to see if your phone is compatible from the list on the web site.
i use a nokia n96 and it works a treat.sometimes slow to get locked on but other than that great
gives you a little boost to carry on so you can see route and times when you get home

Yeh I have the nokia e71 which is compatible. It took me ages to find the correct button to press to get the text with the download link. Don't know why they couldn't just tell me the link so I could type it in on my phone, it would have taken 1 minute as opposed to the 30 it took to finally find the right button.
Nice app though.

yes i think its great. it has certainly got me out on the bike.
did 12 miles on sunday in 1 hour 50 mins. not fast but considering some of the route could not be cycled i was happy with it. hope to do a quick 10 miler mix of road and dirt tracks/fields in under 1 hour.

If u have a nokia gps enabled phone download the Nokia Sportracker. Great tracking and upload to web. Can also share live tracking (if u want !). The only downside with any GPS tracking on a phone is it kills the battery life

just been on Nokia Sports Tracker. very similar to Endomondo
i think they are a great idea and as said before are keeping me going at the moment. hope to be fit enough to have a go on the forum at the end of the month and maybe nip in and start back with Nickster and the rest of the bunch for the slow rides

Once o2 have released my number to orange I'm gonna download this. I liked sprtstracker, but as someone said, it kills your battery. Anyone knoe how long it takes to port your number? I gave Orange my PAC code yesterday and want to start using my new phone

Same thorts here on the battery life, would prefer not to risk using my phone as when you may need it in an emergency. Would be ok for short term use to say clock your time round a trail?
