I'm struggling to get my body fat index down past my best score of 16.5% at present. It seems to be fluctuating between that and 20%. What should be the ideal figure for cycling?? The better weather will see me out on the mountains hill walking as usual, and obviously on the bike, so I reckon I'll be losing about 4 to 5Lbs during the summmer months

how are you getting your fat percentage, i did it years ago at rugby, im sure i was about 6%

Craig,it does'nt work for under 18's-but yours will still be low anyway as you're such a svelte figure ;D . I think t 20 is about right for adults

Computer at DW Sports! I was 16.5% 2 weeks ago. Since then I've done 50Km on the Girls ride and what ever the Forum ride was at the weekend and tonight I'm 20.7%, bit gutted really!

These machines that calculate bodyfat composition etc can be quite fickle and the time of day and what you've had to drink can make a massive difference to the results. They work by taking your weight and height then passing a current from one limb to another and calculating the resistance. High water content in fat conducts more easily where muscle offers more resistance. I have scales that do it and try use them early in the morning for the most consistent results. My home scales (£12 from Aldi ) show me as having 14.1% bodyfat whereas the ones in the gym show 11%. A pro cyclist will usually be around 5-7%.

Dans correct, the only way to get a consistent reading is to do it as soon as your out bed before even so much as a brew The best way is with set of calipers however that seems to be a dieing art these days (and plaese dont say being weighed in a pool as its not realistically doable for 99% of people) Anything below 15% is execellent for an adult and generally requires a well monitored diet.

is it lower for men? i got weighed today and bmi'd - at 22 - i'd be like a starved rat if i go any less below 15-seems extreme to me

I was always told that the only accurate way is to have it done using calipers. I've got one of the body fat scales as well but tend to use it more to weigh my bikes than myself. ;D
