Can anybody suggest suitable accommodation in the Dumfries area?

Does this place do camping for your own tents as well? Looks like ready-made pods/ wigwams only?

The barnsoul one is a good place especially if you want to camp, we stayed there for a few nights on our scottish trip last year.

Does this place do camping for your own tents as well? Looks like ready-made pods/ wigwams only? Apparently you can't pitch your own tent at Gorsebank but there's a site in Dalbeattie that has pods, yurts and you can take you own tent, if you have a mixed group wanting to use different types of accommodation: www.islecroft.co.uk/Don't know what it's like but have booked in for next weekend.

We're heading off up there next week... any trail/ride recommendations (man made or natural)? Never ridden any of the Scottish trail centres, and I know everyone raves about Glentress and Inners, but we will be nearer to some of the others. Not really looking for super technical mind you

I'm up here now Did mabie this evening and it's the best one of the stanes i've done so far. Some bits are a bit technical (loads of roots, some big rocks to drop) but only as technical as the mbr at cyb. Flows really well and it's the only one that hasn't been really muddy and slippery. (parking £2, don't know about bike wash as I didn't need it and tea was £1.10 a cup)Did newcastleton this afternoon and that was pretty good, not as technical as mabie and it's a bit out of the way. The bike park there is crazy! (Bike wash is free but it's just a hose. No cafe or bike shop but there's a nice bakery/cafe in the town)

Done Dalbeatie and KIrroughtree; Dalbeatie the shorter of the two; Kirroughtree quite long and they say the black extention is awesome. Parking at around £2-50; good cafe and seems safe from preditors. Check web for accomodation; we use a small campsite in Newtonstewart.

Final half of the story... ;D Kirroughtree black has some tricky technical bits - I found the first part of the black tough but there were signs for a short cut around it. McMoab is dead technical (even walking it ) but you can ride around it. The rest of the route (red and black) is tough going but not too technical and just a few drops. Watch out for pedestrians walking up the bermed sections with pushchairs :/ Parking was £2, bike wash free although it's just a hosepipe, bike shop guys were friendly, tea was £1.20 I think for a pot. Thought Dalbeattie was better than Kirroughtree although there's some big but not impossible drops again, they just sneak up on you around corners. Dunno about parking as I rode there from the camp site. There's no bike shop or cafe and I think the bike wash was just a hosepipe. Didn't like Ae. Really rough so hard to get up any speed on a lot of sections, lots of fire road and was quite overgrown with grass in places when I was there but they were out strimming. The tail end of "Omega Man" and the final descent is good but the rest was a bit mediocre. There are downhill tracks so you could just push up the path and do those two sections all day ;D Parking was £3, bike wash £1, cafe is nice (tea £1.50 for a big mug) but the mechanic in the bike shop was a miserable bugger. For comparison: Glentress: Tea £1 a cup (I think), bike wash 50p, bike shop guys were excellent. Black trail was good but some technical bits towards the end which you can miss out like I did and is quite long, 1st half of red trail was rubbish (potholed, boggy) but second half was good. Don't know about parking as I rode there. Innerleithen: No cafe, no bike shop, couldn't find a bike wash. Don't know about parking as I rode there but I think you have to pay. Uphill at the start was awful - really steep and then someone put rock steps into it as well. Downhill from Minch Moor was good although a bit wet and I think you have to do it in daylight to get the most out of it ;D

Parking at Dalbeatie is in little Forestry car parks; you just have to spot the signs as you drive along. No cafe; no toilets; no nothing!!!! Good place though; broke a rib there two years ago not lookiing where my front wheel was going ; 180 degrees flip into a gorse bush and a big rock. completly winded , my partner had to drag me out. still pulling the out my rear end.
