Spds!! Does that mean I'd been stuck in? X Better to be stuck in than getting your legs trashed every ride, you'll soon get used to them and never turn back.

Spds!! Does that mean I'd been stuck in? X Sort of. If you get them set up right and get some practice then you'll be able to get your feet out without even thinking. A good place to try them out would be on a spin bike because you won't fall off if you can't unclip in time (Just take some allen keys so you can adjust them, don't know if Geoff uses them or not) I found them really useful for spin because I knew my feet weren't going to slide on the pedals when I got out of the seat. If you have the springs set to be quite loose on your bike then your feet will probably come out when you crash to save you a broken ankle. If your feet don't come out when you crash it can make the injuries worse though. If you go for SPDs you'll have to accept that you'll fall off a couple of times because you can't unclip your foot in time. The trick is to make sure nobody see you e.g. not in the middle of rush hour at a busy junction after you've just overtaken 40+ cars like I did A lot of people feel more confident riding without being clipped in. It depends on your riding style and what sort of stuff you ride. You can get stickier shoes and grippier pedals if your feet keep sliding off the pedals.

Same here Gus - hired a bike in Austria with flats for a couple of days and it felt so weird riding in normal trainers. Also managed to knacker one of my knees climbing a big mountain on them and was limping around for a week afterwards. It's a good thing about clipless that as long as they're set up right they do hold your foot and knee in the right position, and so much easier to climb with too

I have my xtr spds set up loose like thistle says, all the way to the slackest setting and then 3 clicks up. That way my feet usually always come out in a crash and those quick get out moments.

Riding Style - mmmmmmm I haven't got any lol!!!
I have been using my Solomon Cross Country Trainers as they have a good tread and I have DMR pedals with the studs on them hence the scratches on the legs!!! Kept catching my shins on them - ouchhhhh!! I do use clip ins or spin already but I think the cleats are in the wrong place as I feel I'm too much on the ball of my foot.
Maybe I'm just not ment to be a mountain bike :0(

Its a personal preferance but I wouldn't ride off road clipped in, I like to be able to get off the pedals. For me, 5.10's are perfect on a set of V8's...

Ridden spds off road for about 15 years now, that's my choice like you say. I just look at some of the riders I go out with on the Forum who use flat pedals and always notice how they have their feet positioned wrong on the pedals - at odd angles, riding on the heel of the feet, some are really good riders but I bet they'd be even better on spds.
You get so used to clipping in and out it becomes 2nd nature and you don't even need to think about it, when I had a go of flats I was always thinking about how my feet were positioned on the pedals and how uncomfortable they were, played havoc with my knees.
That's just my view.
