A bleed, service, piston replacement, pad replacement, caliper re-alignment, rotor replacement later, I've finally lost the patience with my Hayes Stroker Trails... Does anyone have some awesome brakes for sale? Seems if you skimp on brakes you get sh** ones I need something that doesn't pull back to the bars randomly, doesn't squeal like a turkey, doesn't fade on long descents, and some proper braking skills Failing that can anyone recommend some decent new brakes that don't actually cost the earth? Both front and back wanted, cheeeeeers!!

Fixed wheel hub. Not much maintenance and pretty reliable as a brake as long as you keep your feet on the pedals

well TBO all brakes need new pads, bleeding and realigning every so often, but my Hopes have never given me any serious trouble. Formula's are supposed to be good though and I think the pads are slightly less fiddly to replace from what I've seen (if I'm remembering right)

For cheap good brakes you Carnt beat Shimano deore, awesome brakes for the money and very hassle free, if u can stretch your budget get the xt's but if u Carnt the deore are still awesome, I know a lot of lads running them in DH bikes

I've had cable before, stretching, cables filling with crud and shockingly bad power, saying that they were cheap and I was pretty new to biking at the time... I was blown away when I switched to hayes hydros at first, but they've just got progressively worse (although they've been on the bike now a couple of years). I'd rather stick to hydros hmmm hope mentioned 3 times... Does anyone have the M4s? Would you say they're worth the cost? Something powerful and easy to bleed is my main concern (strokers were a paaaaaain), and I can probably stretch the budget, so long as it's worth it.

Go for the Hope M4's you won't be disappointed. I haven't been since I got mine! Those calipers with the 203mm rotors have never struggled to stop me and I'm best part of 19 stone. They've only ever faded once or twice on very long descents in over 12 months and 800+ miles of abuse.

Don't get cable. I'm agreeing with Oggy, i've had Deores for 2 years now and i think they've been bled once, and no other maintenance except changing pads. Bleeding is really easy as well. Still running them on my Iron Horse and they still stop me.

I posted up a bit too soon, I've fried my M4's on todays forum ride although in my defence I did reach 59.5 km/hr before I tried to stop.

That certainly explains the stink of brakes going down there today Already ordered M4s though!!! Friends have had problems with their deores (similar to those i got with the hayes), so just opted to go big and get M4s... Saying that I'm only 12 stone so a fair bit lighter might get away with it!! It's also a bit comforting gruffalo that you also cooked your XTs (no offence lol) so I might not necessarily have made the wrong choice!!!

It was a bloody long steep descent so I wasn't surprised when I cooked them. You will have no problems at 12 stone!
