If you've never changed the chain but you've worn the chainring out then I'd recommend measuring 12 links of the chain and seeing how much it has stretched. (See "Measuring chain wear" at sheldonbrown.com/chains.html ) I think I've replaced the middle chainring once or twice in 3 years on my bike, but I make good use of the other two which shares the wear out a bit There was an article in one of the bike magazines about the new 10 speed drivetrains. I can't remember if it only applied to 2x10, whether it was road or MTB, or just to one particular manufacturer - the teeth on the front chainrings are matched to the cassette teeth to give some kind of optimal ratio. Swapping to a 32 or 34 might upset this, however the difference is probably negligible.

Definitely do what Thistle says, or one of these tools will pay for itself many times over in saved money on unnecessarily worn out cassettes and chain rings: www.parktool.com/product/chain-wear-indicator-CC-3-2I recommend to buy one and use it after every few rides

I've just replaced my entire chainset, luckily I already had a new cassette lying around to reduce the outlay If you're buying loads from CRC then signup for a cashback site and get a bit more discount

i was to eager and didnt do the cash back site thing in time , but i shall remember the tip for next time thanks well, everything now fitted, (apart from the chain that hasn't arrived yet ) i must say, i was a bit concerned that i was going to struggle with the bigger middle ring and find myself dropping to the granny alot more often than i already do , however went for a spin round llandegla today and i am blown away with it, i fitted a blackspire stinger chainguide at the same time, so on the descents the chain is no longer flapping round everywhere and is now nice and quiet! as for the climbs, usually when i do the full degla black on my own i find myself doing it all in the middle ring, apart from the big climb on the new black section (b line?) which today i seemed to fly up with relative ease (in the new 36tooth ring) and then theres the climb on the new red, just after the bench that has been set into the rock, usually i am in the granny, and end up off the bike by the time im half way up! today, i managed to fly up it in the middle ring, i am chuffed to bits, ;D ;D ;D thanks for a great bit of advice iggy, i am well and truley chuffed with the new setup, despite my initial reservations
