As most of you are aware, some through experience
bike theft seems to be on the increase at the moment. With the scumbags getting more audacious in their in their attempt to get hold of our pride and joy, it’s even more important these days to do what we can to deter them.
So I thought we could have a thread so that we can pass on tips and ideas on how to keep our bikes safe. So if you have any smart ways of keeping your bikes out of the way of the little toe rags, let’s hear it.
Feel free to post up any links to deterrents out there, such as chains and locks or ground anchors, but more than anything, I’m looking for the simple little things that people do, that we can all implement to avoid the dreaded moment when we realise that someone has been and helped themselves to your pride and joy.
I’ll start with a number of things that everyone can do.
Firstly, something we can do to our posts on this forum. Most people put in their location in their profile, very handy for when people want to arrange lift share or are selling stuff. But do you need to be so precise in your location ? For example, those of you that live in very small villages on the outskirts of towns, just put down the nearest big town as your location, rather than the exact village. I’m sure some scrote reading this forum isn’t going to take long to realise that in a village with only a handful of houses, it’s not going to take long to find out which house you live in.
Second thing for me is leaving the bike carriers on the roof of the car when not in use. I often use the road bike to commute to work, or just to get a days riding in when possible. The amount of cars I see parked up in the driveway of a house with the bike carrier still on the roof is amazing. You might as well put an advertising billboard outside your house saying that you have a bike. And the more expensive the car, I’d tend to guess the more expensive the bike. It only takes a couple of minutes to remove the bike carrier, yet this could easily deter the opportunist thief. (And also improve the fuel economy of your car)
Finally from me, and one we’ve all heard about, being followed home from trail centres. This seems to be a common one for those that tend to visit Llandegla. Whether it’s because Llandegla is so close to a big town I don’t know, but I’ve not heard of this happening in any other centre. So if you’re on your way home from a trail centre, just be vigilant as to what’s behind you. Because I live in one of those small villages I tend to be careful of what’s behind me, particularly after a night ride. I have been known to pull into a lay-by on the way home if there is a car behind me to let it pass, then continue with my journey once it’s gone into the distance. Sad I know, but when I spend £3K of my hard earned money on a bike I don’t want to lose it.
So come on then, what tips and do you all have to pass on ? Or what do you use to deter the little shits ?
