Hi I have just ordered some new tyres (rubber queen black chili 2.2 UST) i only got the ust version as they were at a bargain price compared to anything else i could find online!!! Anyways, as they are UST I am thinking, despite the mixed reviews i have heard from people i am going to give tubeless a go. BUT no idea what i need. The rims on my stumpy are dt swiss 420sl and the bike came with 2bliss ready tyres and there was a bag with a couple of valves in it for going tubeless, this makes me think my rims are ready? the tyre's are ust, so presumably they should be ok? so.....is it just a case of sticking on the new rubber and valves, then squirting in some "stans sealant" blowing up, job done? or is there more to it? also, if i need this stans sealant stuff, if i buy the 2oz bottle, does it fit to valve and squirt in or do i need some kind of applicator? anything else ive missed or need to know? many thanks jon

Jon, You will also need some rim tape, I used 'Stans' rim tape. Then you need to fit it onto our wheel, as shown on this video. Once you have the rim tape and valve fitted, put one side of the tyre on, then pour the recommended amount of sealant into the bottom of the tyre, then fit the other half on (if that makes sense). You then need to pump the tyre up ! It's best use either a small compressor or at least a track pump, as you need to get air into the tyre quickly to get it to sit right. Once the tyre is on, rotate it so the sealant inside covers the whole of the inside of the tyre. I've been running tubeless or 18 months and only had one problem, and that was a tear in the tyre on the Clwyds.

thats great, thanks, i "THINK" my rims already have a tape on them though, although its blue, not the yellow stans, prehaps a specialized version? i will get some fluid when the tyres arrive and give it a go

UST tyres are designed to fit onto UST rims, not sure they'll fit properly on standard rims. The system is designed such that the rim hooks onto the tyre, as can be seen in the sectional view on this page: www.mavic.com/en/technology/wheels/UST

I've done 2 sets of DT Swiss conversions 5.1's but the principle is the same. I've used the official DT Swiss kits and the Stans and if you closely follow the instructions all will go OK. Only use brand new tyres, older ones can be a bit too slack to seal properly. DT Swiss rims are a pain when it comes to getting new normal tyres on them, be prepared to swear and break tyre levers getting UST tyres on. My tip do what you did as a kid and use spoon handles instead! Stans you have to watch this video first, makes things a lot easier www.notubes.com/helpcenter.aspx (tubeless kits vid)

thanks for the advice, i am going to get some of the stans sealant and give it a try, if all else fails i guess i will run tubes Don't give up, last month I had my first flat in 2 years. The hard bit is the initial inflation, pump like mad on your track pump and you'll hear the tyre pop onto the rim. Then It's just a case of rotating the wheel and shaking it so that the sealant gets into any small leaks and stops them. If I can set mine up anyone can do it.

well after calling the shop at llandegla to find out if they had the rim tape and sealant in stock i shot up there to buy it to find out they dont have the rim tape at all was not very happy at all, and will teach me to be impatient!!! anyhow, ordered it from crc and it arrived today, got thetape on, fitted the tyres with sealant no problems, nice easy job only thing is now, the 2 "black chili" compound rubber queens i brought off a business seller on ebay turn out NOT to be the black chilli compound but a cheaper version whod have though a pair of tyres could be so much hassle!!!

Wow. That's great, well not that you got a screw in your tyre, but that you only lost 10psi! must say I'm loving the tubeless so far, time will tell

Because I am tight, includes buying gear at Aldi/ Lidl, been looking at web to see how to make own version of Stans. Appears to be mould laytex £10 a litre), slime tubeless (though some people say dont need this if using glitter/ filed up inner tube) and EG antifreeze. Anyone tried homebrew sealant? Always up for a bit of chemistry fun.
