Please don't be emailing off piste routes around really not appreciated Too much of this gpx route sharing going on, us who lead rides put a hell of a lot of effort into planning routes, with years of exploring experience involved, now with gps on phones etc. people just seem to think it's okay to spread others hard work around the .net without a thought for those who put the routes together. Don't forget, routes like mine of The Clwyds (for example) include a great deal of "Off the beaten track / hidden trails" riding that if done in a reckless manner and shared without care, the landowners / rangers etc. in the area could get very upset about. Respect.

Surely if you've got some beef about people sharing your gpx's then the best thing to do is just keep them to yourself rather than trying to make people feel bad about it ...personally I don't have the technology to interpret such stuff so I'll just rely on tagging along behind the good folk with all the knowledge and then get home not having a clue where I've just been

A lot of these routes need to be dealt with discretion and aren't strictly "Legal", there may be times when the farmers etc. are out on the land and other paths need to be taken to get round, someone following a route wouldn't know this and happily carry on and end up causing trouble, trouble that then starts to spoil it for others by the said farmer thinking he doesn't like this sudden increase in bikes on his land, where he didn't mind the odd one... I have spoken to local farmers about this and they don't mind me and maybe a couple others but draw the line at crowds. I've already seen some tracks I've used suffer because of it. I don't have any intention of making anyone feel guilty about gpxing a route, by all means do, I gpxed Ellins on Sunday with Sally but it's on Endomondo and is now set to "Private" for my use only.

Fair point gus, and I hadn't even considered the likes of Strava and stuff even though I've started using it myself but then I rarely look at where I've actually been and just use it as a training log for distance and elevation, plus I take your point about some of the cheeky routes could cause problems so it makes sense to stop people looking at your 'privates' except by prior arrangement

At least that way members have been told and it could make them think about the possible repercussions.

Lots of the routes we do are local knowledge stuff, I don,t know if they got around on gps things if it would bring people from all around . There's a risk there that too many bikers , possibly would cause farmers and landowners to be less tolerant and stop turning a blind eye to small groups. personally I like to stop and chat to the farmers even if they look a bit cross, they always ask where you,re from and seem happy enough to hear your riding on your doorstep . Anyway if you want to do the ride go with someone who knows it that was the idea of this forum in the first place was.nt it?

I thought I'd bring everyone's attention to this thread that got started earlier this week but is hidden within a post on Elen's Revenge, so might have been missed by the majority of people. I’m pleased that this subject has been broached as it raises two issues that have been the subject of a few discussions as of late. The first being the sharing of GPX files. As has been mentioned already in this thread, people spend many days out in the saddle exploring tracks, country lanes and bridleways trying to put together a good route. These days are often carried out alone and very often can mean lots of pushing or carrying when the route doesn’t quite work out as planned. Once a route has been finalised, they are sometimes advertised on here in the ‘Plan Your Rides’ section by the originator. This gives everybody the opportunity to sample the ride without the hassle spending endless days in the saddle putting the route together or worrying about getting lost. Gus summed it up with the following quote – A lot of these routes need to be dealt with discretion and aren't strictly “Legal”, there may be times when the farmers etc. are out on the land and other paths need to be taken to get round, someone following a route wouldn't know this and happily carry on and end up causing trouble, trouble that then starts to spoil it for others by the said farmer thinking he doesn't like this sudden increase in bikes on his land, where he didn't mind the odd one... I have spoken to local farmers about this and they don't mind me and maybe a couple others but draw the line at crowds. I think the only fair way is that if anyone sees a ride that they could not attend, but would like to do on their own, that they contact that ride leader and ask them if they would be willing to share the GPX file. This also gives the originator the opportunity to inform them about any potential hazards and the possibility of coming across angry farmers. This brings us nicely on to the second issue, large groups riding unauthorised trails. I know we all ride where technically we shouldn’t, and when there’s a small group this is not usually an issue. However, MBNW came in for a bit of a slagging off recently on another group’s Facebook page regarding our Forum Ride over The Clwyds last month. Obviously as ride leader I take full responsibility for this, and have been in discussions with the person involved to resolve the matter. His gripe was that we had a group in excess of 20 people riding some little known trails which are not technically rights of way, and although the landowner is aware that these trails are used by bikers and tolerates the occasional rider, he does not appreciate such a large group ‘trespassing’ on his land. This is something that we as responsible riders must consider while planning rides. This was confirmed on the same ride when we were confronted by the Countryside Ranger while coming down Penycloddiau. Although not technically a right of way, the ranger said he turns a blind eye to the odd riders, but the sight of 20+ people riding down it was too much for him to ignore, hence the little informal chat we had when we reached him. To make matters worse, the person I have been dealing with claimed that one of the group had their doubts about one of the trails and felt pressured into carrying on, when they felt uncomfortable in doing so. Now this come as a surprise to me as you can imagine, and I’ll take this opportunity to state the obvious. If anyone at anytime is uncomfortable in riding any of the trails we are using, please shout up and let someone know. We can then resolve the issue without any fuss. This has far reaching consequences for the ‘official’ MBNW rides that take place such as the Forum Ride and Beginners Rides. If we are to remain a responsible group then we need to ensure that any official routes only use legal trails consisting of bridleways and rights of way, and of course trail centres. Obviously we cannot dictate to individuals where they can and cannot ride, so that’s why this only affects the official MBNW planned rides. Hence the reason for the delay in posting up September’s Forum Ride details. Thanks
