just read jon 2 flats thread about switching to a 2x10 chainring setup. i have the same bike as him and my teeth have also all worn out. i am thinking of getting a new chainset, chain and cassette but have already installed a hope bb so dont need a new one. could anyone point me in any sort of direction as the crc website sells loads of different setups and my head is mashed from reading them all. i assume any chainset will fit with my bb. could i get away with just putting different rings on my existing cranks etc etc? need something that will basically get me around the clwyds easily without bending teeth on big ring all the time. i use granny gear a lot so dont want to stray too far from current gearing. argh im more confused than jon was! thanks in advance ne

All middle burn chain rings are advertised for 8,9 and 10 speed.
You also could do with deciding what make you would prefer Shimano Or sram as you could do with staying away from mixing because of all the actuation Ratio's.

There has been alot of talk about front chainset's and alot of people are saying that the normal chain rings work with 10 speed dont know how true that it .... it was me that recommended John onto his current set-up I run SRAM X9 2x10 on my HT with a 9 speed Shimano SLX chainset with no issues at all (KMC 10 speed chain), the 10 speed chain is exactly the same pitch on the inside it's the plates that are thinner outside. This 36/22 is what we both use, super stiff cranks, stiffer than XT apparently and a bargain www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=28019So..... if you've got 9 speed shifters and there's nothing wrong with the rear mech all you'd need is the chainset to go 2x9. If you definately want to go 10 speed then you'll need new 10 speed specific shifters AND a 10 speed rear mech just don't mix them i.e Sram shifters with Sram rear mech or Shimano/Shimano (front mech doesn't matter, old one will do) to confuse matters any Sram/Shimano 10 speed cassette will work. Don't forget a 10 speed chain also as a 9 speed chain will not work with a 10 speed cassette as it's too thick.

mine is already 3x10 so shifters arent an issue. just need new chainrings. it may be a cheaper option to just fit new rings to my existing cranks as i dont need new cranks or BB. then i just have to buy a chain and i suppose i should replace the cassette whilst im at it. cheers. ne.

Isn't the BB axle longer on a triple fitting than a double?

Ne, have you got the 3 little frame tabs on the drive side of your frame at the BB? If you have and your bikes no older than 2010 then it will be almost certainly ISCG05, if you dont have the 3 little bolt hole tabs then you'll need the standard BB stinger.
I have ISCG05 stingers on both my bikes and the work a treat mate.

I was thinking about doing it on the super cheap by just removing the outer ring. Problem I foresee is bolts that hold the middle and outer rings on, presume these will be too long, can you get shorter ones? Alternatively can I just replace out ring with bash guard? Is a slx crank.

Is a slx crank. Seismic! the bolts will be absolutely fine, in fact I have an SLX bash guard that you could have for a tenner I'd even post it for nowt! It was off my SLX double/bash chainset but I had a nice white E13 one going spare which looked better on the bike. It was off a 36t ring but should cause no probs on a 34 or 32 ring as it's the same bolt diameter (104 BCD) If you're doing the next forum ride I could bring it along
