Well finally got my stuff together and tried to fit the bash guard to my 9 speed SLX crank. Well for some reason not enough clearance behind crank arm for the bash guard to fit. Doesnt matter how I try to fit just wont sit squarely. So thought would try on 9 speed Xt cranks on other bike. Again not enough clearance behind crank arm for bash guard to sit properly. Maybe being super thick, but what I did was remove outer ring and just try and replace this with bashguard. Am I missing some trick? So my alternative is not have outer ring/ bashguard and fit new bolts that are short enough for just middle ring. Anyone know what chainring bolts I would need and where one could purchase such a thing. Definitely thinking of going to two chain rings as cant really remember the last time I really used outer ring on either bike. In fact cant really use outer ring on Scott as smashed three teeth on descent from Drum, having fitted new XT rings one week before All assistance for mechanical duffer welcome.

I've just converted my bike to 2x9 and the bashguard fits on the recesses where the big ring sat on the 4 arms of the crank. It was very straight forward as the bashguard came with longer bolts in order to go through the bashguard and secured through the 2nd ring. The only thing I didn't manage to fit right was the blackspire chain-guide as I couldn't get a proper chain alignment with it on the small ring. Took it off and removed one chain-link to compensate for it.

Recess on bashguard just not quite deep enough to allow it to sit squarely. Can get either two bolts nearest the crank arm to fit or the two furthest away but not all four. Will have to investigate some more or alternatively just run without basguard. There was abike for sale that has 2 x 9 slx for sale on forum with no bashguard and nice bling bolts. Will have a look through archive.

Running with no bash you have to be really careful that your front mech doesn't over shift slightly as there is nothing to keep it on with no outer ring or bash. Just done 2x9 with no bash for xc use
