After going through a number of outer chainrings it's time to re-think the set up on the 5 and go for a double at the front instead of the triple I currently have on it. I've got a bash guard which will replace the outer ring (Cheers Iggy ) and will just need to adjust the stops on the front mech to ensure the changing still runs smoothly. However, I want to fit a chain device to stop the chain from rattling about, but am unsure which one would do the job. I'm only after a basic one that can be bolted to the frame as the 5 has ISCG tabs and will keep the chain in place while ragging it down the gnarly stuff Also if anyone has one sitting in their shed that they would like to go to a good home, shout up Cheers

Just wondering Oggy, have you got a 9 or 10 speed cassette?

Middleburn do a 38t middle ring for dual ring setups that fits on a triple. Shifting is still pretty good with a 24t inner, a 22t would be pushing it a bit. As above, 1x10 is the way to go if you are fit enough as it saves a ton of weight and and is foolproof with a decent lightweight chainguide.

Really like the uncomplicated idea of 1 X 10 but as you said Doug, I ain't fit enough plus it'll mean a whole lot of spends again. Reckon I ought to try a 2 X 9 conversion first me thinks.

Well I've opted for the Blackspire Stinger, just need to set it up over the weekend, replace the outer ring for the bash guard and adjust the dead stop on the front mech. Going to stick with a 2x10 and also keep the front at 22t & 32t, although I may change to middle to a 34t at some stage. Just need to get out and ride the thing then

22/36 works great. The cheapest 36t ring is the Deore steel one for £11 online. Shifts well and lasts ages.

Does the blackspire come in a non ISG fitment as my giant reign is BB fitment only . I will switch to 1x10 at some point and run a "clutch" rear mech to stop the clatter plus save on weight but pennies first.

I've just bought a MRP x2 from Llandegla which is compatible with a double chain set.
