Why oh why did I think this was going to be a five minute job Having had both the bash guard and chain guide sitting in the garage for over a month, I thought I'd get it fitted this weekend as the kids were playing in the house, and the rain made it impossible to go anywhere. My first problem was fitting the bash guard. Once I'd removed the cranks and stripped it of the chain rings, I found that the inside diameter of the bash guard was too small for the spider After a bit of work with a file and a bit of gentle persuasion with a rubber mallet, I got the bash guard to fit and re-assembled the chain rings. Job done, or so I thought. All I had to do now was fit the chain device and refit the cranks. So with some enthusiasm, I set about fitting the chain device. As it came with no instructions, I decided to fit the spacers that were provided beween the BB and the chain device, this went well until I tightened the black plastic locking nut on the non drive side crank. This had the effect of pulling the drive side crank tight onto the BB, which resulted in the granny ring interfering with the three chain device screws So it was off with the cranks again and the removal of the three washers. Once I re-fitted them and the non drive side crank, I found I had the same issue once tightened up The 5 is now sitting in the workshop (for workshop, read spare bedroom), where sometime this week Im going to remove the bottom bracket and swap the spacer on it from the non drive side to the drive side. This should give me about an extra 1.5mm between the BB and the granny ring. If it doesn't then I'm buggered So, has anyone else encountered these problems when fitting the chain guide ? Also, if you did, what action did you take to resolve it ? Cheers

Only problem I had was the chain-guide as I couldn't get a proper chain alignment when the chain dropped to the granny ring (this is a 2X9 conversion btw). So I had to knob it off and took out an extra link to reduce chainslap instead. The Blackspire Bashguard fitted a treat though. I reckon the chain alignment issue is probably caused by the fact it isn't an actual double ring crank? I'm keeping the guide for when I convert the bike to a 1X9 some time never as I need to get out on the damn thing first!

Tarbo. A BB fit stinger doesnt need the 3 screws as they are for ISCG mounting, the stinger replaces one BB cup spacer. An ISCG fit stinger goes onto the ISCG mount with the 3 screws then should work with the BB spacers reassembled as they came off. Pics would make it easier to spot whats gone wrong. They are desinged to be run with two rings and bash on a triple crankset. Full Stinger instructions here.

Thanks for that Doug! That explains that the problem for me is not the crank but possibly the wrong BB. Might revisit this tomorrow.

Cheers Doug, but I have got ISCG mountings on the Orange 5, and have gone for the ISCG stinger Another thing, but I don't think it's related, is that I changed the bottom bracket about 3 months ago from a Shimano XT to a Hope one. The Shimano one did not need any spacers fitted to either the drive side nor non-drive side. However, n the Hope bottom bracket I had to fit a spacer on the non-drive side. I'll swap the spacer over to the drive side, which should move the cranks over by about 1.5mm. This should give a bit of clearance between the bolts and the granny ring. Ill try and get some pictures up tomorow which should give an idea of the problem.

XT should have 1 2.5mm spacer between the nds cup and BB shell and 2 ds spacers between cup and shell on a 68mm BB shell. For a 73mm BB shell it should have only one 2.5mm spacer on the ds and no nds spacers IIRC. E-type mechs and BB mount chainguides replace 1 of the ds spacers. So I think something is not right somewhere.
As the spacers are usually 2.5mm that's how far over you'll be moving it but I still think your a few spacers short somewhere unless the 5 uses a 73mm BB shell.
EDIT, just confirmed 5's are 73mm. Facing takes a little off. One 2.5mm spacer on the drive side and none on the non drive side should put you right.
