Standard for me. Remember that hill that we did on Sally's Dolgellau ride up from the cycle path? That's on it too! My God!

It's still in my diary but not entered yet. Just put an entry in for the standard route now. Looking forwards as I really enjoyed the Tour de Mon at the weekend (except for the feed stations!

Well Aled and myself were the only MBNW people to try this new event in the end, and it was a good route to try as long as you had your climbing legs with you. The start was in Aberdyfi which I've never been to, lovely corner of Wales with a sandy beach and plenty of watersports going on. Probably not a novelty for all the coast dwellers on this forum, but I don't often get to the sea. The route started out fairly flat with a nice run up the coast to Barmouth and across the old bridge with the damp wooden planks (called for a few MTB skills at least). We crossed the estuary again on another planky bridge and then the real climbing started into the foothills of Cadair Idris and back down to the Cross Foxes. Then over to the start of Bwlch Y Groes. I've never ridden it from the Dinas Mawddwy side, and the climb certainly lived up to the reputation, with plenty of walkers. I did clear it to the feed station at the top, but it was a toughie. Descending into Llanuwchllyn on the far side, I thought the worst was over, but oh no. We crossed the A494 and on the minor road towards Trawsfynydd through lots of gates held open by the marshalls. We got to a height that was almost as high as the Bwlch. The last gate at the top was missing it's marshall, and also the next junction (left to Dolgellau and straight on to Trawsfynydd) someone had nicked one of the arrows, so hopefully nobody got lost. To be fair to the organisers this was the only real problem, and it was pretty well organised for a first attempt. On the way back it turns out we went within about 100 yards of the CyB half way cafe. If I'd known I would have stopped for a brew. I made it round in about 8 hours 5 compared to 6 hours 54 for the Etape Eryri. Made the Eryri look like a walk in the park. Worth a try next year if anyone fancies a challenge? It was deffo a toughie even the standard route. I passed a lotvof walkers on each of the climbs and on the last 5 miles in. Putting the training miles in is essential for these events and it was obvious that a lot had overestimated their abilities!
