I tend to use both. If I go on a short ride of up to a couple of hours i use a waist pack that holds a couple of water bottles, theres just enough room in there for an innertube, mini pump, tyre levers, super patches, multi tool, phone, showerproof jacket and me keys. something like this www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360023504&N=Lifeventure%20Base%20Runner%202%20Waist%20BagFor the longer rides ive got a 20ltr camelbak that will hold food for the day, a good sized 1st aid kit, maps, a few more tools and esentials. I bought that out in Cyprus, Because I was guiding groups I had to carry a lot more kit. Something similar to this www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360028104&n=Camelbak%20Octane%2014%20Plus%203%20Litre%20Hydration%20System

Hydrapak. Been using a Hydrapak AS Trail that i got free with my MBUK subscription last year (Only reason i signed up - was cheaper than buying it outright!) www.nashbar.com/nashbar_photos/500/YS-T-RD-ANGLE.jpgIt holds 2Litres of water, with enough room either side of the bladder to hold my tyre pump and shock pump. I can fit a small bag of tools (multitool, puncture kit & latex gloves) in the main compartment, along with my phone and a small energy bar. I also strap my waterproof in the netting on the front. Its good for Llandegla and a few hours up the Clwydian Range, but not for all day expeditions. So this week i've bought a: Hydrapak Big Sur: www.hydrapak.com/images/product/Big%20Sur%202007_Charcoal.gifWanted to stick with Hydrapak for the bladder/fitting compatability. Holds 3 Litres of water, also holds your helmet when not in use, without taking up any space for your other gear. Went for the 2007 model, as it comes with the netting/bungie cords for my waterproof. Not used it yet, but theres buckets of room for a spare innertube, few more snacks, another top/base layer, as well as a sunglasses pocket. Both have a Hydratunes port to feed your ipod through to the gizmo pocket inside.
