I've got an old Garmin one which had the additional topo maps on it, although it wasn't near as detailed as the OS maps. Mine wasn't a cycling specific on though so no heart rate/cadence readings.

Yeah can do gar, although it will take a good few rides to get used to it and figure it all out, Ive got the best part of 3 weeks off over xmas so that will give me the chance to get to grips.
The aim is that hopefully between us all we can get a good selection of rides up on here.
This has no colour mapping on it, neither will it show you a grid ref, you can download routes onto it from memory map and follow them, it will track a ride you are doing and then enable you to download it to your pc, and it gives you all the data that comes with it. Ive been told that to follow a route there is an arrow on the screen that points you in the right direction and zooms in when your at a junction or track.
I got this because it was a good deal and I wanted to try and keep it simple.
I hate reading manuals but it looks like im going to have to on this one! ;D

Maybe your next purchase should be walkie talkies for when John gets lost. Bagged a bargain and yourself an early xmas present.

If your phone has GPS I'd go for the viewranger maps. I've just bought the ones for Glentress @ 1:25,000 for £20 quid. These are genuine OS maps as well.

Yes when i use GPS I use the viewranger. Mostly use it for walking although I do use it to record routes sometimes for cycling.

I'm possibly looking at going down the phone GPS route and Viewranger but wanted to know more about what it can actually do. How do you rate it guys?

The price of the maps are reasonable and you can customise the maps as well, whereas with something like satmap I think you have to buy a region.

Can't comment because i haven't figured out how to use it yet I went for the cheapo option though, and only bought the software for the phone (no maps). My plan is to use memory map to plot routes and then export to my phone, obviously without any maps on my phone i will just get the traditional sat nav screen view. This also works in reverse, i plan to record routes that i've done and then upload to my PC to view in memory map.

Any glitches or annoying software/battery/other problems worth knowing about? Will Viewranger work on any GPS enabled phone or does it have to have a Symbian OS?

Only had it a couple of weeks mate but i'm impressed with it so far. No problems with the OS or software and the video player / music player / camera is excellent. Of course using those features a lot will make the battery run down very fast. The only niggle i have with it is that i can't cannot connect to my wireless network at home. Apparently there is a known 'feature' whereby it struggles to connect to Netgear wireless routers supplied with your SKY broadband. Something to think about.
