Had a cracking ride last night, thanks for dyls lighting up the trail with his search light so me and oggy could turn off the lights and save some battery! ;D ;D
Was good to meet you Gar, shame about your bike, i think you did the right thing turning back, that could have been a nasty off if the crank arm came off. Hope its sorted soon for you. catch you again mate. Ive ridden a few times on the mountain above my house but last night was the 1st time to do a trail (man made) And i felt i rode it a lot harder than during the day, I know it seems faster at night but this is my theory! When you ride with lights all you can see is the tunnel of light infront of you. because thats all you can see you cant see the hazards and all the things that will kill ya on each side of the trail so you ride without a care of where you will end up if you crash because you cant see it.
In my opinion now a helmet mounted light is a must, I saw how well it helped me navigate around the wooded trails, However, I did find that you have to watch where you look with your helmet light because you have a tendance to follow where you look and it nearly caught me out a couple of times ;D

lucky in some way it happened where it did. would have been a right pain if i was miles away from the car, and having to stop every 1 - 2k to tighten the thing. and as you said if it snapped completely it would have been painful. bought new crank sets. bike ready 2m. went for the new slx rather than the xt's. a bit heavier but meant to be way tougher.
