My cameras have between 4-21mb sensors. My Lumix FT4 (which is basically bomb-proof and my preferred MTB camera because it is seriously muck proof) produces images most of which are over 5mb. Why such a low limit on file size?

because you are displaying on a monitor , 72 DPI at say 1200 x1080 is enuff, imagine say a report on a ride with 40 pictures at 5mb each, 200mb to down load or so just the pics, when you will never have to print them off, just view on screen, viewing on a phone would be painful!
