If its just for commuting, and on surfaced/tarmac roads I'd go for a road bike with thicker tyres, something like 28mm width.
Its handy to be able to fit mudguards on commuting bikes in the winter when its wet.
I wouldnt worry about disc brakes.
Recommendation would be a giant defy off ebay.

Hi I'm new here, but just thought I'd add my £0.02 I was in a similar position. I wanted a commuter type bike that was capable of going off road to do light trails. In the end I picked up a Cyclocross bike. If you're not aware, for all intents and purposes it's basically a road bike with off road tyres, no suspension though. It was fine for the local light trails around my house and place of work. Mine was a Ridley XBow and set me back £700 however, you can get much cheaper CX bikes. www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/road-bikes/carrera-crixus-limited-edition-cyclocross-bike-2015Sometimes the non-raced oriented CX style bikes are referred to as "adventure" bikes. This is mine: As you can see it doesn't mind mud.

update, ive sorted out a bike. Think i had a good deal to be honest. Managed to get a practically brand new carrera zelos road bike. Came with upgraded shimano pedals cleets and shoes. Brand new helmet with led on the back. 1 large upright pump and 1 frame pump. 2 bottle holders. Tool kit etc. Paid £210.
If i want to use slightly larger tyres on this like the cx bike do i just need a set of rims off the cx model?

The calliper brakes on the road bike won't have the clearance to allow the off-road / CX knobbly tyres through. You'd have to swap the brakes to disc / v-brakes / cantis. Look at the brake calliper from the front and you'll see the gap between the top of the tyre and the calliper is very tight. You may get away with slightly fatter road tyres 25-28mm, possibly even bigger, but you won't be able to squeeze knobbly tread through. Anyone who knows different feel free to hop in though... Worth pointing out for everything you got in the deal for £210 that's a bargain.
