I'm looking at changing my drivetrain in the coming weeks and am planning a 2 x 10 setup. I am looking at either XT or SLX, I'm not sure that I can justify the extra ton on the XT and might spend that money on bacon butties etc. Is there much difference in terms of performance, the kind of difference a casual rider like me would notice? If weight is the main difference then I will save the cash and have a dump before each ride!!

Apart from a small weight difference there is no advantage to be had both work fantastic

A mate of mine works in a bike shop and says the same as Karl: No difference really. SLX is basically last year's XT, while the XT is just a bit lighter. But as you say, go for a good dump before the ride, or don't carry so much sh1t in your back-pack and you're saving the weight anyway. Save the money and buy yourself some pies

More pies, more dump. More space for more pies!

XT has a wider choice of crank lengths, if that matters to you. (It does to me, as I like 165 cranks).

I have to say I'm used to XT and my new hardtail came with SLX and you do miss being able to change multiple gears from a single press in both directions (although I think the SLX I have is maybe a year or two old so they may have added it now). The brakes are fab though.. better than Hopes
