Well as mentioned on the Events section, after doing the Grizedale Grizzly last year I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of lanes, rough farm tracks/bridleways, single track, fields and fast fire road descents on my Reaction 29er.
In September I took the plunge and got myself a new Raleigh Mustang gravel bike on SRAM 1x11 with 44 front cog on 10-42 cassette, hydraulic disc brakes and carbon forks, running on American Classic rims with G-one 40mm.tyres.
So, with both gravel bike for the smoother events such as the Moors & Shores/Lakeland Monster Miles, and the Cube 29er for the not so smooth Peak District Pioneer, Pennine Pedaler, Galloway Gallop it's all go for 2017 !
I got going early at 8am for Pickering and got booked in to the Black Bull at 1pm. Quick change and test run on the bike to try out the new tyre pressures of 50psi front and rear which I found just about grippy enough on the loose, but also nicely rolling on the tarmac sections.
That evening there was nothing for if but to pick the biggest meal in the pub, the mixed grill, followed by a choc fudge cake and ice cream to fuel up of course!
5.30am dawned and I got to register for 6.30am with a 7.30am start straight into the single track and fire roads of Dalby Forest, before getting onto the tar to then link up passed RAF Flyindales, over some fast field and mud path descents, that saw a couple of big sliding offs, which was really funny to watch but with no injuries! We descended on a very fast cinder track which is part of Sustrans route 1 down into Whitby to the first feed station before continuing along the cinder path, which then led into a rough lane consisting of potholed tar and brick cobbles for the long climb past Robin Hood Bay. Very fast undulating tarmac sections followed before a mega fast cinder path section of 10km + where I averaged 32km/hr dualling with a member of Sherwood Pines club who was on a XC spec carbon HT, just taking turns in the lead blasting past 10 or more other riders. Brill fun!
Following this it was uphill more or less on the tar all the way back to Dalby that saw us hit a tarmac climb of about 1.5 miles that ramped up to 15% ish for the last quarter mile, an absolute killer.
We entered Dalby forest for some muddy moorland singletrack and fast fire road before tackling a 5km fire road climb that seemed to go on forever, passing numerous riders pushing mountain bikes, totally blown!
The final section was a 2km single track through the woods back into the finish, where the clocks stopped at 5 hours 8 min 45 sec for the whole 60 miles.
The next round is in Bakewell for the Peak District Pioneer. I'll be on the Cube and hoping to have as good craic on it as I did on this round.
