Martin,
I take mine out with me when im on my own and i find i perform better, i tend to listen to stuff that gets me going on the ups but downhill i hardly hear a thing as i block it out to concentrate on corners etc and on my last trip out i did the black at Llandegla in just over 1hr 40m compared to the usual high 1hr 50m - 2 hrs.

I think you do push yourself a bit harder when listening to music, especially on the uphills, I was out this morning on my road bike, put an album on, the next min it was finished, like I never heard a bit of it, but subconsciously I think it did make me work harder.

I find listening to music too much of a distraction while riding.
I prefer to listen to nature ;D

I use the mp3 to kill the boredom of the rack (alpine climber) and the turborollers when trying to drag my aching body back to some level of fitness - outdoor if I use it, I generally fall off :-)

I worked in Bristol for a while a couple of years ago and managed to get out on my bike loads, the local ride was the Ashton Court Estate, Timberland Trail & Leigh Woods area (fantastic riding by the way).
Because i was riding alone i used to stick on my MP3 player on, i found stuff like Funeral For A Friend, etc, made me grit my teeth and peddle a little bit faster ;D

Read somewhere that Linkin Park gets the pedalling going that much faster. I have to agree. I often have the track "Bleed it Out" on Repeat when I'm in the gym.

Nothing can beat the melodious noise of a the mech and chain clanking about as you are pinning it down some steep single track.

So there I was in a hotel in Milton Keynes - bored.
It had a Gym so I took my mp3 player and decided to try to bust my knees on a treadmill.
3.5 minutes warm up to Pink Floyd, then the start of my all time workout favorite tracks, but wait whats this .... Pan Pipes chillout volume 3 ... no no how did that get on the player? where did my noises go?
Later I rang home ...
Ellen have you been messing about with my player? Yes.. its broke I think.
hmmmm.........

i always carry an mp3 its nice to know i can have a boogie if ever i want 1!!!wicked for the down hills and hiding them annoying creaks ya carnt always pinpoint and wreck your head like a dripping tap!!until you can be bothered to fix it!!! I treat riding like clubbing bang some banging tunes on and stomp them pedals spin and just get into that trail like ya bouncin round a club!!defo the healthier option!!!!
