After looking through the service manual for my rear shock, I apparently have to dismantle the damn thing after every 8 hours of wet, muddy riding. www.foxracingshox.com/fox_tech_center/owners_manuals/08/eng/2008_om_eng.htmDoes anyone actually do this? It actually seems quite a task to do after every couple of rides, as well as being far from cheap with new fluid and o-rings required.

What you need to be careful about is invalidating the warranty though.
Specailized's own shocks/forks have a 5 year warranty but does require you to service them as per schedule - I think its every 50hrs for a minor service and 250 hrs for a major service.
I've had problems with the AFR shocks on both my epic and stumpjumper so I'll have to stick to the schedule to keep myself covered.
On the other hand I had a Fox rear shock on my Marin and nothing went wrong on it in 4 years - it was only serviced once.

I don't have a problem with doing the said maintenance if its required, although it does seem extreme doing it roughly every 2 or 3 rides.
The stumpy is the first full susser i've ever owned though, so this is all new to me.

no. ive got an enduro, and for a long time the only mtb that i had, so i was riding trails, free riding and dh on it. really giving it some grief. ive had it 18 months and only after glentress did the shock need any attention. this was mainly due to it being -10. the guy said if id serviced it like i was suppose to after 12 months then this wouldn't have happened, so no. don't bother. just make sure you have enough air in it and give it a quick spray after every ride.

could be a stupid question, but what do you spray your shock with? plain wd40 or a special shock spray?

Don't use WD40/Duck Oil or SAS on your shock or fork as it will impregnate the rubber seals and make them go hard, renderring them useless.
Use a silicone spray or purpose made shock lube.
