No probs changing for a different set of ratios, as long as you have a long cage rear mech. You'll probably need to add at least one more link to the chain. When you've changed the block, you'll need to reset the rear mech. Always best to start from the beginning:
- chain on middle chainring at the front
- put the rear mech into top gear (smallest rear cog)
- loosen the cable clamp
- with the cable having a very small amount of play (ie just loose enough not to sound like a guitar when you pluck it), tighten the clamp up again
- now attempt to go through the gears onto the lowest gear (largest rear cog)
- adjust the stop screw until you get the chain onto the largest cog and until (viewed from the rear) the two mech jockey wheels align perfectly with the cog
- shift to the middle of the cassette and shift between the third and fourth cogs a few times - if you don't get clean shifts, twiddle the adjuster where the cable enters the mech very small amounts until shifts are clean and the jockey wheels correctly align with the third and fourth cogs every time
- now check the shifting onto the largest and smallest cogs again, making sure the chain isn't thrown off
- with the chain on the largest cog, the 2 mech jockey wheel centres should be vertical. If they're not, you need to add or remove a link (or links) until they are vertical
- with the chain on the smallest cog, make sure the jockey wheels and cogs are not touching each other
- go have a celebratory pint, or phone the bike shop, whichever is most appropriate to the result!
