Are rotors caliper specific, or can any rotors of the same size be used with an existing caliper and lever setup?

Any rotor will fit providing it matches the fixings on your hub and they are no bigger than your existing rotors. If you want bigger rotors you will have to get the adapter for your caliper.
you thinking of changing?

That's what I thought. No, I'm not thinking of changing, but thinking of what rotors to fit on a spare set of wheels.

While we on the subject of rotors would any one know by upgrading to larger ones ie 180mm or 203mm does this make that much difference to overall stopping power,
Or has any body go down this road or just paid out for more expensive kit,
At the moment I'm running Shimano Decore M535 which came standard with my Trek hard tail.

The bigger the rotors the more stopping power you get. If you want more stopping power without shelling out on a whole new system try bigger rotors and the adapters for your calipers.
On my Scott Ive got hope mono mini's with the original XT 160mm rotors, stopping powers not great. If I could change to 180's I would.

Any reason as to why you can't upgrade your rotors, or is there a limit to what size rotor you can increase to ?

Theres no reason why you carnt upgrade your rotors but if you increae the size of rotors then you will probably need new caliper mounts. The bigger your rotors then the more standoff you will need on your calipers hence new mounts.

Any reason as to why you can't upgrade your rotors, or is there a limit to what size rotor you can increase to ? Check the warranty on your suspension forks if going for 203mm. Some don't cover running a disc that big. Depending on your type of riding, i don't think you'd need a 203mm though. I've just replaced the 160mm front rotor for a 185mm one and its more than powerful. I wouldn't bother replacing the rear - it'll just lock up much easier.

I can upgrade them its just a bigger pain in the a$$ than usual, the hubs are a center lock rotor mount rather than the usual bolts, probably a weight saving thing with it being an XC race bike. have a look. When the shop fitted the Hope Minis they told me to leave the rotors on or it would cost me If I wanted to change.

I have same center locking hubs on my wheels, I did not think there was much of problem with the upgrading apart from needing the tool to remover the rotors, seem to be plenty of choice for replacement or I could be completely wrong

Yeah the hope rotors are the bolt type. Ive been looking to see if they do an adapter but dont look like it.
By the looks of it on the wiggle page shimano only do the 160mm rotors in center lock.
If the bike wasnt carbon and a little heavier I think I would have more trouble stopping it!
