(quote from a forum ride thread) Well said, all this reminds me of a thorny issue we had around Peckforton a few years ago What happened? not far from me & thought of going for an explore round there (excuse for a pint at the Pheasant Inn) but I know there's game keepers in them there woods!! I'll be disappointed if the "thorny issue" was just a puncture!

The "thorny issue " was a run in we had with someone who thought he had authority to stop everyone using the woods. He claims, probably right that only footpaths run through there, he stopped all the bikes but let the local hunt run riot through there. 1 woman walking on the sandstone trail was knocked over by 1 of the hunts horses and injured and when we kicked off about horses using the footpath we were threatened with the police and further legal action. This was in the days when Peckforton Castle was open to the public before it changed to a hotel or whatever it is now, since heard ( dont know how reliable) that they have tried to have some of the paths moved/shut that go close to the castle.

Hmmm, I'll have a look at some point. It's now a Hotel/restaurant/wedding venue & now featuring a .........Facolnry!? & they want to expand to keep more rare breeds or something!? also heard they do 4 x 4 driving, so there might be some bits up there they're not too fussed about. I have noticed new footpath signs in the last year or so (whilst walking!) which point directly through a gate house door, which looks like Cheshire CC or whoever are trying to open up some of the obstructed/vague footpaths. I was too scared to try them though, looked a bit like Hillbilly territory! cheers for getting back btw. gotta love the Cheshire Hunt!

The sandstone trail goes that way. 'Long distance' paths like that are usually quite well signposted and looked after - like the trunk roads of the footpath world ;D You could drop them an ignorant letter along the lines of "are there any off road cycle routes around Peckforton castle". There might be some permissive paths that aren't always shown on maps or they might be planning something. A quick check of the map shows a bridleway along the north of the hill (at the bottom) but it stops at the borough? boundary which might be a mis-classification.

We used to go to part of it behind (correct me if im wrong) the waterboard place or water treatment place. Up part or there, there used to be like an old rail track running down the hill, used to be some good tracks around that part. Is there nothing around Bickerton hill or Rawhead that you know of?

I know where you mean(the waterboard place), it's a bit busy with walkers so I'll give it a miss. Bickerton is National trust & clearly anti-bike.
I probably just have a nosey round the double track/fireroad bits. just looking for a nearby bit of climb/mileage to break up the Delamere monotony!

We have the same problem with Delamere. Have you had a look at www.delameremtbtours.co.uk, could do with finding some of their rides around Kelsall and Kellsborough castle.

there's quite a few bits in Primrosehill wood, & the bridleway down the side of Tirley Garth is good + the track next to willington woods is ok (only climbed it). got to do a bit of road in between these areas though. went to the Boot inn en route! - not done anything around the castle though.

Do you know anything of the cycle surgery route around there that delameremtbtours speak of?
