Need a new chainset for hardtail its 8 speed, is it ok to fit a 9 speed chainset with 8 speed cassette and running gear, all help appreciated.

I think the chainrings work with pretty much anything, but I'm still living the the square taper age ;D When I got new chainrings for the hardtail it didn't mention anything about compatibility with the cassette.
I think 8/9 speed chains are the same though so I can't see why there would be a problem (I've used 8 speed chains on my 7 speed cassette no problem). I think 8 speed cassettes are the same width overall as a 9 speed.

Chainsets aren't specific to the number of gears, they'll work with any amount. I'd recommend changing the cassette and chain at the same time if they're pretty old to minimise any wear.
Thistle: 7/8 speed chains are different to 9 speed. As you say, 9 speed cassette is spread over the same distance as an 8 speed, so the chain needs to be narrower
