Never bothered before as i have always said if the wheels go round then it's okay. Problem is that the wheels quite literally aren't going round so i'm looking at puttiing it in for a service. What is a reasonable price these days?

The price of a service is one of those 'how longs a piece of string' jobbies innit.
If your wheels dont turn it sound like it could get pretty expensive, probably a new set of bearings. Can you do it yourself? If not I'd take it in and get a quote.
What else is up with it?

To be honest Martin, i think it's just the brakes need a little playing with as they don't seem to release free as when you lift the bike and spin the wheel it's not spinning freely. Not very clued up on hydraulic brakes so don't really want to start messing with them. Got the merida next weekend so could do with getting them sorted!

Could be a sticky piston, The calipes may need a stripping down and given a good clean.
What brakes are they?

Maybe the pads are to close? i had that problem at Llandegla and felt like i was pulling a trailer around so got a disk pad spacer and did the trick and the wheel is now spinning freely.

Taking them apart tomorrow and see if i can figure it out! Went to work on it yesterday and was feeling it even on downhills. I time my rides to work and yesterday i was 11 mins slower than when i use my "ride to work" bike.

Well, i had a little play with them last night and made them worse! Now i've had to book it in for a service at a cost of £35 plus vat.

Tell me about it. To be fair they did a good job and everything moves as it should do but i never thought it would cost that much!

yep, all of the above plus put new oil in and bled them. Problem was that i'm doing the Merida this weekend so need them doing and because of work this shop was the only one i could get to through the week.
