So ... here we are in mid August and it looks like its going to pi$$ down 'til next March! When I took the dogs out this morning for their usual hour.. like drowned rats when we got back.
Living in this temperate climate you end up with quite a large selection of waterproof gear from one piece rigging suits to lightweight running jackets, my next piece of hi tech plastic to wrap round me, is for winter cycling. All of my roadie stuff is just too flimsy for MTB use, in particular they all leak at contact points when using a hydration pack.
So what do you use, whats good, whats poor?

At the moment Ive got a cheapie halfords thing that does the job but hardly comes out of the bag. If it does rain Ive got one of these www.endura.co.uk/Product.aspx?dept_id=122&prod_id=137 Its handy in light showers and drys out pretty rapid but no good in heavy non stop rain. Ive been thinking of getting something before the winter comes but It looks like I'm going to need it sooner than later. Ive got a cracking RAB walking waterproof and its a nice cut for the bike, as tempted as I am sometimes to take it on the bike, If I come off and trash it i will be gutted, especially at £200 a pop. I don't know what to go for to be honest, Endura do a good line at reasonable prices.

I think the Altura Nevis Waterproof Jacket is the free gift again this month if you subscribe to MBR. Also this month in MBR they're testing waterproof jackets, i think the Endura Laser Waterproof Jacket came top with 9/10 -

Thanks for the info all.. All my walking and climbing stuff is a bit baggy and heavy for bike use, I suppose I could always put weight on to solve that... maybe...
If the Endura stuff is as well made as their shorts they are well worth a look, so I will.
That Altura Nevis thingy looks good - is there a reasonable overlap of the zip?
I've got a set of waders with inbuilt steel toe cap wellies here, they may be more suitable as the year moves on :-(

I tend to sway towards the Endura stuff. I've had a few pairs of Endura gloves and have currently got the Zyme shorts, all good quality gear at a decent price. I've got my eye on this as my first purchase for the winter - Endura Gridlock Waterproof Jacket

As wet as it is, i don't think i'd want to wear the Nevis at this time of the year. The Missus has one and it looks more suited to cold, winter riding. (Mesh lining, fleece neck, etc) i have an Altura waterproof, but i'm not sure on the model. Its thinner and packable compared to the Nevis. The way i see it though: If your cold, your not riding hard enough

The way i see it though: If your cold, your not riding hard enough I agree that during the warmer months when riding the artificial trails thats a fair strategy - but in winter in the mountains when you have an off or your bike breaks then its not so good... but its each to there own. last night watching a perfect sunset over the sea and a perfect moonrise over Snowdon.. didn't need a coat :-)
