Hi, I have these hydraulic disc brakes: After getting halfway round the Marin i began to hear a hideous squeel type sound coming from my rear axel / brake area. After some faffing i managed to establish that the tyre spins freely, brakes are applied, tyre doesnt spin freely anymore! I spoke to the guys in the Betws y Coed Bike Shop and they said that it may just be gunked up. After some cleaning and degreaing they are nice and shiny but still have the same problem. It seems as if they just dont 'ungrip' the disc enough when i release the lever. I just hope that if i fix this the noise will go and its not bearing etc Any advice would be much appreciated! Cheers :]

How old are they brakes? Sounds like the piston is sticking. If they're still under warranty, get them done through that. If not, take them to your nearest Magura dealer for a service.
You could attempt them yourself, but you'll need to invest in a bleed kit and caliper seals

did you get grease on the pads or rotor? that can make them make a really bad noise too.

did this coincide with you removing the wheel (for a puncture etc..) or maybe the skewer wasn't tight ? and if so did you make sure the wheel is in the dropouts properly?
even a small movement in the dropout makes a quite a difference in the runout of the disk and I found that to be the biggest source of noise with mine.
Assuming the brake caliper is properly aligned in the first place you can try this quick and dirty trail side fix - try pulling the brake lever hard *then* lock the skewer and see if the noise changes at all.

Way out of warranty but from this end it seems like they do need a service. How much will that cost though roughly?
Ihavnt got aany grease or lube on the pads at all it just started making noises after a few rides. The pads look good too, lots or braking left in them.
What do you mean by locking the skewer by the way?
They may need bleeding i reckon as they dont seem to react much when i release the brake lever

As a guide, The Edge Cycleworks charge £40 to bleed and fit a new set of brakes. I'd imagine a service would be of a similar price.

i just rang Brian Rourkes in Stoke and they quoted 15 per brake to bleed but two weeks to do!! I might just get my own kit and have a go

was that with a caliper strip down and clean too? I definatley think thats the problem with them, as it's preventing the piston sliding back in. You'll need new seals for that, as well as a bleed kit
